Somehow despite running as fast as she could, the little girl didn't feel like she was getting any further. Part of this might have been the snow covering everything in the sparkling white sheet, making most places look alike to someone who was just dashing past them. However having kept running for a good while now in the snow and clothed in heavy winter clothing, her body began to give in. She simply didn't have much more strength left. Catching her breath just for a few moments, she looked behind herself to see if the mean man in red was still on his trail. Thankfully not a soul was on the street besides her. In fact it seemed a little odd how she hadn't seen anyone on the streets of the usually active town. Granted, it was past midnight on Christmas Eve, so perhaps everyone was asleep, waiting for morning when Santa would come.
Yet in the morning all of them would be punished just like she was about to be. Instead of joy and presents, all everyone would get was misery and spankings. And the same would come next year, and the year after that, and the year after that. There would never be a real Christmas again as long as that mean Santa was in charge. Just thinking about her favorite holiday being ruined forever brought a tear to her eye. Even trying to think back on her aunts words didn't seem to help. Things couldn't be okay anymore. Santa was gone, trapped in a stupid gem and couldn't be back anymore.
That's when the words of the mean man in red came back to Shandra. "As long as this crystal is within my grasp, my version of Christmas will eternally last."
Maybe if she could get it away from the man, there was a chance to save Santa. But he was way bigger, way too hard to beat in a fight. Even her gun was already emptied, only having her second one to fall back on. She'd need to get Aunt Celia since she was strong, though chance of her believing the little girl wasn't too good. When she last claimed to have seen a sea monster, it turned out to be a piece of driftwood. And the time before that when she thought she found Santa last Christmas is was just some man in a costume. All the adults were so dumb they wouldn't believe her either since only the girls mother would even come with her to see these things. She was alone in this.
Yet one more ray of hope remained: the other kids she saw. They both saw what happened and they'd believe her. She even gave the brave kid her pastry so he'd definitely help. Maybe they both even loved Christmas as much as she did. Alone she couldn't beat an adult. But with two other kids it seemed much easier in her mind. "Okay, I just need to find them. Then we're gonna save Santa AND Christmas. I know we're better than him together, I'd do this myself if I was a little bigger. Just like mommy and Aunt Celia always braved danger as pirates."
Now only hard part in her mind was actually finding the weasel boy and the brave boy. Though for once, luck was on her side. In her rush she had completely missed that there was another set of footprints in the snow about the same size as hers. Naturally she hadn't been too keen on their shoes and couldn't tell which one, but it was a start. Tracking the trail left in snow through a small side alley, the little girl began her plan to save Christmas.
