It was difficult to navigate through the black smog that coincides with the night. Each step led to their leg being buried halfway in frigid snow. They did their best to walk as straight as possible while being careful enough to not walk into an obstacle.
“Rebecca, are you okay?” Ara asked out of concern as she took a breather. Quite some time had passed without any signs of being pursued. It seemed they were going to make it out of this mess alive - thanks to Pluto buying them enough time to escape. She felt guilty to be taking advantage of someone else risking his life. Wandering in the darkness, she heard nothing but silence except the sound of her own breath, and that soon led a dreadful sense of loneliness.
“Rebecca?” She called out again, a little louder this. Had it not been for the cold temperatures, sweat would have formed from a panicky feeling emerging in her heart. Where was Rebecca? Did Pluto’s sister get lost somewhere along the way? Or was it the other way around in that she was the one who was lost?
W-What do I do now?
It took a while to notice, but the air that she was breathing seemed cleaner than before. Her gaze went skyward as a lunar beam shined down, revealing the purity of the air. She could see the white snow glittering around her as well as her surroundings. The black soot that tainted the air was gone. What could this mean?
Gazing in the distance, golden-hued eyes widened at the pathway that she came from. The footsteps which belongs the Rebecca clearly made a U-turn. It wasn’t that either of them had lost their way; that little girl deliberately snuck back to where her brother was.
T-That little... Ugh...!
...
“Huh?” Pluto grew alarmed as the thick darkness that once shrouded him soon left along with the strong burning stench. All of the black miasmas were being pulled in towards Santa’s body that’s absorbing them like a vacuum cleaner. It wasn’t much longer until the human eye could start to see the colors of their surroundings from the lunar light provided from above. With the layer of pollution removed from above, the night sky could now be seen.
Gritting his teeth, the zoan-user could actually see his own body; his demonic form was now revealed. His environmental advantage had been snatched away just like that; he could no longer hide in the darkness and excel like before.
“I didn’t think this smokescreen would backfire on me,” Santa said in way that was suppressing his irritation. “But now..., I can finally see you two brats!” All of the nasty, burn-scented soot that he had accumulated gathered around his arms at an immense size. Reaching out, he extended both arms outwards, one towards the pink-haired fool who bit him and the other towards the valuable zoan-user who mauled him.
Not good! Surprise attacks were the sole reason I’ve been able to harm him so far. Now, he’ll be able to react to anything I do.
Flapping his wings forth immediately, the winged humanoid figure propelled his body backwards in a sudden burst of speed. With the sudden sense of danger, he concluded that it was too risky to be up close to the logia-user. There was no other choice but to retreat! Even with his ability to fly, his chances of making a successful escape just went down to a much lower percentage than before. Without the safety measure, he wasn’t going to gamble his own life away.
All desire to kill this man soon perished upon hearing the ultrasonic signature of his little sister’s breathing being closer than ever.
“What!?” His eyes enlarged when Rebecca was now within sight. So distracted by the threat at hand, he failed to notice her arrival.
Why is she still here!?
