Many floors above Hammelton's office, Hanif sat in his own and shifted through his paperwork. There was always some paperwork to keep him busy when he wasn't out hunting the bad guys. Usually there was even more stacks of paper when he returned from an outside mission and today wasn't any different.
"Maybe I should just let them promote me. I'm already doing the paperwork of a much higher position after all."
But of course that was just an idle thought. Hanif Amir knew that he could best serve his cause if he stayed in his current rank and his superiors knew as well. They had pointed that out more than once, usually while showing an apologetic smile.
Hanif didn't care.
There was no need to belittle him with their pity, he was glad to be where he was. The job was worth doing after all, even if not many people really knew what he was doing.
But this paperwork... he could do without.
WIth a big sigh, Hanif picked up his pen and signed another document. Responsibility could be a pest sometimes.
"... and when do you think they will serve us some food? I bet it's going to be absolutely terrible." Kyou's cellmate gave him a look. "Might be fine for you, you seem used to it, but my sensitive stomach can't handle food that isn't of the best quality!"
"..."
"And what about my work? Do you think even one person in this place about my situation? No consideration whatsoever about what might happen to my business when I'm not around to take care of it?! The trouble with employees is that they need to be permanently supervised or they won't work properly..."
"Yeah... I bet they can't work when you're not at home sleeping in your bed till noon..."
"I have connections, you know. Those foolish little Marines will soon regret that they've imprisoned me so unrightfully! They are high ranked people, not just ..."
"Please, someone make him shut up..." Kyou thought, even though he had long ago stopped listening. But as far as background noise went, the guys chattering wasn't the most pleasant one could get. It was so annoying in fact, that Kyou even considered to take some action.
But neither the option of shutting the man up with a punch nor the one where he confessed his crime just to get away from his cellmate held real appeal to him and so he suffered it quietly.
Bruce perked up his ears when he became aware of the smile on the face of his observation target. The haggis had not seen that facial expression very often on his food-provider, but he had observed it a lot on other humans. Generally it seemed to mean something positive, like happiness or delight, despite the huge amount of teeth shown, which any animal of common sense could recognize as an aggressive threat. Only humans were so illogical and strange, or so the white furball had thought before he had left the Pikt for the first time in his life and found out that the world wasn't only bigger but also a lost stranger than he had ever dared to imagine.
The male human specimen went to the door, peeked outside and stepped through the door. Bruce hurried to follow him, but his haste hadn't been necessary. The man was walking with normal steps as if he didn't have a care in the world and definitely not as if he had searched through a room which smelled like some other person's lair.
indecisive, the haggis sat at the door... wondering if he should follow the man some more or if it was time to return to his food-provider. It had been quite a while since he had left Kyou alone and who knew what the stupid boy would do without him...
"... and I said to him 'gambling doesn't seem to be your thing Mister' and can you guess what he answered me? I was like-"
"Shush for a moment." Kyou interrupted the flow of words. The pink-haired boy had heard steps approaching and even though he couldn't be sure they were headed his way, he still prefered to hear them coming.
It was definitely them, for they were talking and while they seemed to whisper, they didn't seem to be aware that their voice carried well through the small corridor that lead to the cells.
"... Hammelton is going to be mad at us."
"Then what would you have us do? Say no to royalty? The Captain isn't back yet and it's not our fault that the Noble arrived earlier than expected. We're just going to do what we would have done anyway, only a little earlier."
"If you say so, but it's your responsibility!"
"Oh good Lord man! Why would it be my responsibility? Hammelton is the Captain so he can take the bloody responsibility and put it where the sun shines not! I'm only following orders."
Three Marines appeared in front of their cells. One of them was a woman and Kyou suspected that she had been quiet during the talk, for the two voices he had heard didn't sound feminine at all.
None of them looked familiar to Kyou, but the base wasn't exactly small, so that wasn't much of a surprise. After only one look at Kyou and the merchant, the woman went on to one of the other cells, leaving the men behind.
Keys jingled and then there was a click as the key was turned in the lock and the door was pulled open.
Kyou watched them through the cold rusty bars as the Marines exchanged a few hand gestures, not caring that they were seen by the prisoners.
After what seemed to be a heated discussion in sign language only, the sturdier man of the two simply shrugged and pulled out two handcuffs and entered the cell while his partner stood in the opening, riffle ready in case one of their prisoners would try an escape attempt.
"Time to get some fresh air Ladies. There's someone who wishes to meet you." he said.
"Oh spare us from your lousy jokes Dunny." his friend complained.
"Lousy?! At least I don't..."
"Why is everyone talking so much... Can't they just give it a rest... This is really irritating..."
