“Damned Fog! Always happens around these swampy Isles whenever I’m pulling into port!”
A deep, thick fog covered the sea of the Whaleshark route, and barely a peep came from the crewman aboard The Black Jaw. Captain Balmondt was usually jolly as could be, but the fog that mysteriously appeared as they closed in on the port of Barabara, the only city on Arabara island, had soured his mood. The creaking of the floorboards only added to the eeriness of the silence, and only the low grumble from the captain and a few crewman could be heard. Cedwyn was below deck with his companion and robotic ‘assistant’ B33, repairing the last of the damage to her synthetic skin.
“There. With that, you should be in top shape. I’m going above deck to check things out… It’s not usually this silent so close to the harbor.”
As Cedwyn headed to the top deck, his vision was heavily obscured by the fog and he could barely see two feet in front of him. Moving slowly toward the wheel at the rear of the ship, he spoke up as he approached Balmondt.
“What in the world is with this fog? I’ve never seen such heavy fog around Barabara in all my years living there.”
Balmondt scratched his head as he edged into the harbor and called for his men to start the docking process.
“Tis a mystery to myself as well. I’ve run this route hundreds of times and neve seen such dense fog as this. A little fog is no problem for The Black Jaw, but this is a little ridiculous… Either way, we’ve arrived, so prepare yer stuff. We’re headed ashore!”
It had been a fair few weeks at sea along the Whale Shark route, passing many islands and only stopping to restock supplies as they ran low. The Eternal Pose that Captain Balmondt kept on him allowed for quick travel between Arabara and Academy Island, and was one of the reasons they were able to avoid the otherwise heavy Marine presence between the two. Arabara was a more relaxed island than most of the others, and the peace that had been maintained between the Marines, religious groups, and pirates in this area have made it a den for pirates who don’t cause too much mischief.
At Cedwyn’s side was a small pouch that he glanced at for just a moment before heading below deck to alert B33 of the situation. Inside that pouch was a fruit, one that was hard and covered in spikes, resembling a Durian with strange swirls around it. Cedwyn had heard of Devil fruits before, but was unsure of whether he had found one. He only managed to grab this from a fruit vendor while aboard another island restocking. The shop keep told him that it was merely an under-ripe Durian and that letting it ripen would lead to the most exquisite flavor, even if it smelled like a week old carcass, but even after a week, the fruit never changed color or shape, remaining a bright yellow regardless of how long it rested.
“Alright B33. Let us be off… It’s about time I faced the wretched monster that awaits me at my home.” Cedwyn grumbled, then spoke under his breath. For my sister’s sake.
The two of them left the boat, packs in hand as they stepped off the boat and onto the island.
“This is only the beginning. Hope you’re prepared, B33.”
