“Oh no… no no…!”
Maple was running through the streets of the sterling white city of Minato. She wasn’t even bothering with unravelling herself into bandages so that she looked like some kind of mummy. She was much too upset to fuss with a disguise. So, a furry little Tanuki girl was sprinting down the streets and attracting a lot of stares. Maple was frantically recounting the previous night’s events in her head. How had she lost it?! She’d had it before bed right?! Why did she have the memory of a goldfish?!
With a hiss and an unbroken string of expletives, Maple burst into a store - what amounted to a pawn shop - and took a quick scan of the inventory. The shopkeeper stared at her as she stormed through the store to the counter and slamming her paws down.
“Did someone sell you an eternal pose recently?! Today? Yesterday?!”
The shopkeeper shook their head in a mix of fear and confusion. Maple whirled around, taking a shaky breath and storming back out onto the street. Tears started welling up in her eyes. It had to be here somewhere right? If someone had taken it, they’d try to fence it soon, right? She just had to keep looking. Looking… Maple sniffled. She forced herself to move, breaking out into an anxious jog. She turned down the market street, weaving through the thin crowds of the morning. Her eyes trailed over the market stalls offerings, searching… searching!
“...AAH!!!”
Maple practically teleported through two people to apparate in front of the stall. Her grubby paws snatched up the eternal pose off the table and looked at the island name carved into it. Criss Cross. A soft relieved smile broke out across her face for a half second before the vendor plucked it from her hands.
“Wuh-”
He held up a hand to silence her. Maple pouted. He then held out a hand expectantly.
“Money first.”
“B-But!!! That’s mine! Someone stole it-”
He cut her off, clicking his tongue to stymie any further arguments.
“Money. First.”
“B-But…” Maple’s eyes grew big and shiny with tears, “I don’t… have any money…”
“Not my problem,” the vendor replied curtly, turning away to put the eternal pose on a backshelf. Maple lunged over the tabletop, reaching for it, but was yanked back by a pretty big guy who tossed her on the ground. Maple hastily picked herself up and glanced around for help. Who was she kidding though? Who was gonna help a total stranger?
