“Oh my a cook and a warrior then? I feel safer already!” Wicked was laying it on thick. But she liked to play the part of the damsel when it suited her. She liked acting in general. Besides. No one liked her real personality. No one understood what it meant to be a gravedigger. On top of this, she wasn’t really looking to be friends with the fellow. At least not yet. Right now she wanted company, and an escort. For all she knew, this guy was a criminal.
”Well let’s see what they have for us okay?” Wicked said, steering them to the registration table and rather abruptly shoved the next person waiting out of line. The large brutish man received what would appear to be a gentle palm to the side, and sprawl head over heels out of line, and into the nearby wall. Wicked winced. He looked so big, she didn’t mean to make a scene.
”Oops! I’m sorry mister!” She feigned ignorance, clapping her hands together and bowed apologetically. “I didn’t mean to make you trip! I just wanted to ask if we could cut in line!” It was a weak excuse, but she played it up. Turning her head slowly, she eyed the next few people in line with an uncomfortably cold stare and a childish smile at the same time. “Do YOU mind if we cut in line?”
The next few people in line looked at the now unconcsious man against the wall, then back to Wicked, then to Soro, then back to Wicked. “NEWP.” They all waved their hands, stone faced, at the same time. Wicked immediately went to a warm and joyful mood, flashing a smile and a V sign with her fingers in front of her eyes.
”Thank you so much! You are so kind!” With that, Wicked hopped up to the table, where the young woman who was signing people up was waiting with a bemused look on her face. After adjusting her glasses, she pushed a paper towards Wicked and Soro.
”We certainly have positions for youth available. In fact, the Professor has need of young speci-“ The woman adjusted her glasses, and corrected herself. “-i mean, assistants. Just fill out this form. We should only need you for a few weeks, but you will have made more than enough to get off this island and to wherever you need.” The woman then turned to Soro, looking him over. “May I ask what specialities you have? Do you have any skills? Please fill out the form as accurately as you can. And if you have any particular skills that stand out, you can write them on the back. Talented individuals might qualify for additional compensation for services rendered.”
The form was fairly standard. Wicked sadly didn’t know how to read all that well. She’d never had to learn on her island. Everything was song and oral history there, and besides, her job involved more symbolism than language. So she filled in what she could, and signed with a big WW at the bottom before handing the paper over with a smile. The woman took the paper, inspected it for a minute, then turned it over.
”Everything looks to be in order. You, um-“ She frowned. “-you dig graves?” Wicked struck a pose with her fists on her hips and nodded.
“Yep! That’s me! I try not to fill them if I don’t have to though!” She laughed out loud, thoroughly entertained by her morbid humor. “Oh that’s just a joke! Not the first part.”
