As expected of a man famous for his accidental groping, Melvin, one of Shade's new hires knew how to hide from trouble. The short man with the dull, blonde bowl cutm freshly broken nose and hands scarred from what looked like years of work on the docks led them through the less glamorous alleys of Serine City until they reached a partially underground pawn shop that would need a fresh coat of paint in order to be considered merely seedy.
Some of the stock of the shop included a poorly taxidermied cat with two heads sloppily sewn onto the torso, broken den den mushi shells what Shade first assumed was another poor attempt at taxidermy in human form sitting in a rocking chair until Melvin shook the old woman awake.
"We'll just be a moment, 'gamma."
The blonde with the penchant for trouble sorted through a pile which Shade imagined being Melvin's security stash of junk. The large-haired pirate shipwright secretly hoped for explosives to deal with the woman of size that was most likely hunting them. She was optimistic but realistic about incurring someone's wrath and felt safe assuming that they were all potential murder targets.
It took days of staying in Ice Nine for Shade to kick up enough trouble to be in a life and death situation but Amino was a fast-placed island.
Shade was given a smelly, brown cloak to veil herself while Swain, the tallest of the trio was given a blanket that made her rancid cloak smell like it was personally laundered by angels and dried by the breath of God. Melvin went without cover due to his lack of Swain's distinctive fu manchu style facial hair or Shade's light brown afro. With his innocent look and bowl haircut Melvin looked like the kind of person who could blend in anywhere and not be noticed. She assumed that would be helpful for a trouble-magnet like the young man was.
"What in the hell do you get up to, Mel?" Swain asked with his mouth agape at how prepared the smaller man was.
Shade developed a momentary crush on Melvin when he roguishly winked, smiled and stated that he hadn't always been a shipwright. Though if he "accidentally" touched her butt again she intended on ridding him of his manhood.
The well-armed swordswoman left the abode of the old woman and her hoard stone cold sober as if all the dust motes she had inhaled soaked up the alcohol from her blood.
The back alleys became cleaner the closer they got to the heart of Serine City as if their destitute drunks and degenerate gamblers were picky about where they passed out.
Shade had an imagination and she'd heard stories but neither compared to the reality that was Serine City. Tall buildings of glass and marble as well as strange, glowing signs for every business, legitimate and less so. It was colorful, vibrant and just what Shade needed to distract her. She was actually anxious in an excited way rather than a negative one.
While the young woman gaped like a tourist Swain played it cool for almost a whole two minutes before pointing out attractions he had never seen before like the dancing fountain with dyed water and outdoor fight involving what looked like two dugongs.
"Go have fun, you two," Melvin said while he reclaimed his smelly cloak and blanket in one swift movement. "I'm going to pay Nobuya a visit."
"That's 'Captain' to you," Shade said, thinking of the look that she had been given earlier when she was too familiar with her leader.
