16“Was she… hit?”“I don’t know…”
“Fools,” Captain Xin Gi growled, observing the section of stone promenade that his ship had just barraged; “She’s a known Ability user and she definitely called upon her powers just before those shells hit. I’ve only heard reports of what that Devil Fruit does, but I can say for certain we’re not dealing with some pushover who doesn’t know the ins and outs of their Fruit. There are reasons they called her ‘The Red Terror’ – my money’s on her power being the main one. Now, prepare another volley! Get ready to fire as soon as the smoke cl–!?”Blam!
The whole vessel lurched, knocking seamen off their feet and even causing their CO to stumble. An explosion had rent a hole in the ship’s portside; the same type of explosions that had just pelted the promenade upon which their prey had stood. The smoke was still billowing, ascending towards the darkened skies above and masking the backdrop of El Town. Despite their analysis of the bombardment zone, they had failed to do one crucial thing.
They did not look up.
“What in Hell’s forsaken name…?” Xin snarled. At the peak of the plume of heat and smoke was something abnormal – something swollen of silhouette and claret of colour. And, holding onto the back of that airborne behemoth, was none other than Scarlette Grimm-Rosa.-~-
“He’s primed explosive shells? I knew we should’ve called the Commodore for this – one hundred percent,” seethed the smallest of the Cipher Pol triumvirate, Percival, as he scanned the scene from his position aboard the second, supportive vessel. Angrily he adjusted his spectacles, lenses catching the gleam of heat from the flames that waned from the battered seafront. “Captain Xin Gi’s too aggressive in his approach. Using high explosives in a populated zone? That’s near enough Buster Call action: One hundred percent intolerable!”“Wholly agreed!”“Indeed!”
“I’m not too concerned–soyo,” announced the familiarly breezy voice of Libeccio. The winged warrior stood upon deck, piercing blue eyes observing the explosive scene unfold. He had seen the bloody behemoth ascend, but something else had caught his eye. Something dark, even against the blackened background, had exited the battered ship. There was not an ounce of doubt in his mind that this being, otherworldly as it seemed, was another Ability user. But first and foremost, he had to check something, closing his eyes and pointing a finger to the Phlegyas: “…I’d be more concerned about the other people in that ship, if I were you–soyo.”“She has allies…?” Clementine mused from the side:
“Or, are you suggesting she’s got bigger issues than us?”“How many explosions have you heard–soyo?”
“Hmm…? Five wh–? Where are you–!?” Miss Rosa’s words fell upon deaf ears. Or, more precisely, they fell upon ears that were not there to hear her anymore. In the blink of an eye, Libeccio had kicked away from the deck and disappeared into nothingness, demonstrating extremes of speed that no normal human eye could hope to track. Indeed, all she could make out were minimal plumes of water vapour that revealed the rapid acceleration of a warrior of such immense calibre.“Wait, five…,” Dec murmured:
“S#!+!”“What…?”“Five sixths of the volley,” Frank announced:
“There’s another shell that hasn’t exploded yet!”-~-
“This isn’t really how I intended this to happen, but, I may as well make use of this while I have it~!” Scarlette smiled, looking down upon the battlefield from her abnormally high vantage point. Toes and knees rested upon the bulbous back of the floating Gigasculus, provided lift by a combination of air bubbles pumped into its viscous flesh while forming and the pillar of heat that had been forged by the initial bombardment. A few scratches here and there upon the vicious vixen’s body were nothing to worry about, neither was the burning sensation that was a rift being seared shut, though the charred hem of what remained of her skirt only served to further disappoint her. Nonetheless, she was not letting it get the better of her, instead focusing upon retaliation.
“Aim,” she said to the Homunculus, whose enormous left arm had been compressed and held in place by the fingers of the right. Within the left’s own digits was a ball of gunmetal – an as of yet unexploded shell that had been part of the assailing hail. At her beck it adjusted its angle, very slowly losing altitude as the fetid updraft calmed. It locked its alien sights not upon the intruding vessel, but upon the broken ship below.“Fire!”
Pwoomp! The Gigasculus’ engorged limb was let loose; the shell was propelled by air pressure and gravity’s grasp from its hand, much like the battery that had spat it towards them in the first place, but without the thunderous outburst. The jarring release very nearly tossed Scarlette from her monstrous mount, but she held on by pressing her hand into the buoyant gel. In her other hand she still clung the knife, though what benefit it would serve at this point was unknown. A small weapon like that was only useful in close quarters. Even so, she watched with strange glee upon her façade – a mask to her disdain for having to use such an unreliable method of attack – as the blackened orb shot down like a comet. But that glee soon turned to surprise as an unknown figure appeared in the middle of the air.
“Who are–!?” she tried to ask, but a flicker of steel caught her gaze. The shell, a perfect sphere of metal, had just been cleaved into quarters nigh instantly. The four pieces ignited and smoked, but did not explode, merely crashing down without ill effect. One struck the Phlegyas’ mast, smashing the timber slightly, whilst another splashed into the murky waters. She did not follow what became of the other two segments, more concerned by the unnerving presence of a winged man with blond hair, blue eyes, bronzed skin and what appeared to be an enormous pair of scissors held like a sword…{OOC}survives the barrage thanks to some quick thinking, getting some serious air in the process thanks to her Souffler and Gigasculus combination! Having managed to have her colossal conjuration catch two of the six cannonballs, she’s retaliating! But Libeccio steps up to the plate and saves the Phlegyas from an explosive fate! Has this battle taken to the skies!?
