Taavi thought he was ready to shoot his rifle's bullet towards attacking rebels, but he was technically wrong. The walking and fighting trees were not something Taavi had seen before, but those that have survived thus far talked about them. Taavi could hardly believe was the survivors were saying, but he had a sinking feeling some parts of the rumors were true. Turns out, every rumor was true. With how short this rebellion has been going on, of course the rumors had to be valid to some degree, especially considering the sudden rise of rebel power. These tree-people seemed to be responsible for the everything related to whatever Taavi had heard about concerning the rebels.
What the hell!? Dammit...maybe? If they are tree-people, maybe I don't have to hesitate the shoot and kill? But what if they're on the verge of extinction!? Gah! I can't think straight!
Fortunately, or unfortunately, Taavi would be given the chance to decide right away if he would shoot or not; a quick little tree-person was close enough to Taavi to take away his saber without giving Seaman Recruit Jones much time to react at all. All Taavi could do was try to turn around, clench his chest in pain, and turn forwards again in hopes a second swipe wouldn't befall the Marines from behind.
At least I still have my rifle!
With the tree-people being serious about fighting the Marines, Taavi had no other choice but to act in kind, so to speak, and fired his rifle at an incoming tree-person! This tree-person looked feminine, but Taavi had his mind set on pulling the trigger in order to at least save the lives of his fellow Marines. After all, if he didn't fire against an attacking enemy, his buddies might fall instead of the tree-people. Morals are a luxury during the heat of a battle, morals are for the strong not the weak, and therefore morals be damned, in this case. Taavi's bullet flew towards the incoming dryad but missed.
Dammit after all, they're quick!
Taavi then simply switched places with a rifleman behind him, reloading his rifle in the process. There was nothing more the injured Marine could do at this point. The tree-people were fast, strong, and clever. They knew how to fight battles, also willing to put their lives on the line as sacrificial pawns to get the job done. Then a thought occurred to Taavi which would light a fire in his gut; if the tree-people were actual people capable of thought and self-awareness, then why would they rush into battle to willingly? The thought pulsed within Taavi's head as he continued to do his job as a rifleman. If Seaman Recruit Jones was correct, then these tree-people are being created by a devil fruit user. Then again, the world was so strange that anything could be possible. Blaming devil fruit users for everything weird wasn't the most logical thing to do.
