The gunshots down the tunnel made Idol flinch and squat down to make himself smaller, giving no struggle at all when Navi grabbed the map. Although Navi was taller and standing in front of him, the idea of getting even closer to gunfire and being hit by a stray bullet was not something Idol was too fond of. In fact, his eyes bugged out in surprise as he watched Navi blindly run ahead of them into the area, unafraid. Yes, the gunshots had stopped, but they could just start up again at a moment’s notice, and Idol was worried that Navi would be harmed, momentarily forgetting about his monstrous strength and the fact that anything around the corner would more likely need saving from him. He turned the corner and felt a great weight leave his stomach when he saw that he was unharmed. It was hard to see most of the area, but he was able to make out Navi’s form ahead of them
“See nothing to fear… Navi saved you Adrian.”
Idol stared, offended at Lily’s comment, before lightening his expression and recalling that Navi did in fact beat him and was proven to be the better man. He smiled a wide, insincere smile. So wide and fake that it looked as though he was wearing a mask.
“You’re right” he said through grit teeth, adding to the mask allusion, “I’m glad that someone as strong and brave as him was around to… take the lead.” Build up that opponent, make them look like a million berries. Then, when you finally defeat them, you look like a billion. It hurt to say these things now, but when that golden moment would arrive, it would all be worth it. Like rain washing away thick layers of mud and filth. "Handsome too!" he added, following behind Lily around the corner.
“Do any of you know first aid? I think he needs it,”
Idol hadn’t really been paying attention to his surroundings, but once he brought his lantern up. His expression fell and was instead replaced with one of confusion and fear. He struggled to speak and found himself coughing from the ungodly odors still hanging in the air. Suddenly, he fell into a coughing fit. Whatever it was in the air, it had tickled his throat and irritated his nose. How he craved for the fresh air of the surface, and to be away from this entire scene altogether.
Looking down at the marine Lily was referring to, Idol looked away and shut his eyes tight, holding his breath to keep from throwing up at the sight. Broken bones, he could handle. Enormous bruises, he could handle. Bullet wounds were another thing entirely. He opened his eyes and looked down at his untapped hands. If he had wrapped his hands in athletic tape earlier in the day, they would be of some use in some very basic first aid. But his bare hands, used for nothing but farm work as of late, were of no help to the poor marine.
“What about you, Aide?” Leona said, Idol not taking his eyes off his boots to look at her “You got any other ‘skills’ you wanna show?”
“No” Idol said, gruffly and quietly, and looking down the tunnel where they had come. “No, I don’t think so.”
For a moment, he considered running back through the tunnels with the marine in his arms like a newlywed bride, but Idol saw the numerous problems with trying that. For starters, his companions probably prioritized getting their treasure and would most likely be taking the map with them. Leona had shown no interest in helping, and Navi and Lily’s demeanor likely meant the same. Furthermore, as he was arrested and thrown in a jail cell earlier in the day, Idol was a criminal, and would face even greater punishment if he were to return through the tunnels. A longer jail sentence, countless hours of community service, perhaps even permanent solitary confinement. Any of these potential sentences would get in the way of Idol's plans to fight strong challengers and, along with any plans on helping the unfortunate marine at this time, were deemed unacceptable.
“I’m really sorry” Idol said, kneeling by the marine and clutching his hand. “We can’t afford to help you right now" he said, staring his unblinking green eyes into the marines trembling blue ones. "When we get topside, we’ll let everyone we can know about what happened down here. They’ll get you the medical attention you need, so just hold on a little longer.” Idol turned to look to at his companions for any sign of consent. Right now, all he could do was keep the marine calm, and pray that medical attention would arrive when they would call for it later.
