With Marl safely aboard, Merle breathed a sigh of relief. For the moment the bombardment of missiles from the marines behind her seemed to have stopped. She took her hand off the wheel to look around. The momentary peace and quiet was nice and Merle laughed a little thinking that from here they were off scotch free. She did not remember even getting her picture taken so it was unlikely that she would get a bounty from this. The same could not be said about Marl but such is life. Those thoughts brought a little more color to her somewhat wearied face. And for the time her thoughts rolled to that of her wounded leg. She sorely needed to give it a better examination and cleaning. The extra fighting would have done nothing but bad things to it. It was unsafe to say the least.
Her reverie of freedom was lasted only a short while as she heard the whiz of an object fly by the boat. Merle's eyes had barely caught sight of the cannonball, but it had missed by at least a decent margin. Which only gave her more hope. Facing back towards her enemies she placed both hands at her sides turned her head upwards and let out a hearty laugh. "HA! Is that your best shot?" Merle yelled that overconfident statement, in her head they were as good as gone. Her laughter continued on for the time, even the captain was too inaccurate for this shot it seemed. It was perfect now all they had to do was ... she heard a crash and crack from behind her. Turning slowly she saw an object bending down towards their boat. Marl's voice then rose up driving her out of her joyous mood and revealing to her the current danger that they faced.
The cannonball which had missed them had sped on to the mast of a ship which was coming up beside them. The mast it seemed was going to fall directly into their path barring their exit and leaving them caught here. That was unless she did as she was called to. Frantically Merle leaped back to the wheel as well as her damaged leg would let her and put her strength into pulling the wheel hard to the side the way she had been before. The wheel fought her but she was the stronger, in the end this was still a wheel meant to be turned by a normal human. The wheel spun causing the ship to groan as it was forced into an ever sharper turn out of its usual path. She did not blame the ship as it fought her to stop turning away from its path.
Luckily enough Merle had figured it out and actually spun the wheel in the correct direction and the ship made its turn away from the mast which was falling in its way. Instead they were greeted by a different sight, the mast which hung out before them scratched its way along the side of the boat slowing down their acceleration. As their boat rubbed against the mast Merle could feel it lurch forwards fighting to push by the mast. Hopefully they would push the mast aside, it seemed a likely happening. And it did, the boat pulled free and for the moment Merle gave another relieved sigh. Followed by another short bout of laughter. Free at last, right?
