A trail of bubbles was left as a small blue form sped through the water, it zigged and zagged as behind it a large black shark swam giving chase to it. Merle turned back her eyes wide with fear, the shark was nearly three times her size and though she was faster it was keeping up with her fairly well. Maneuvering in the water she was quickly finding all her movements quite useless as she could not break contact in the open oceans of Paradise. There was no way to break line of sight and she could not create a large enough gap between them for fear of tiring too quickly.
Her options limited, there was one choice that would get her out of this sticky situation, find land. The great black shark would definitely be unable to catch her there, unlike her it did not having gills. But how close was she to land? Would she make it before it caught her? Merle looked down at her wrist staring at the log pose that sat snugly upon it. The needle swung slightly as she turned and changed her course, fortunately for her, a brief stop at an island a few days ago had locked her log pose onto the next island on the route. Originally she had not planned on going there, but given the situation she could easily make an exception. A brief burst of speed added a little more distance between her and the shark as she adjusted her heading once more to match the needle.
The shark had found her while she hunted lesser prey. Merle of course had noticed it as well. In the distance it did not look so intimidating, interested in how it may taste she had launched her harpoon at the beast. When it fell short only barely touching the shark’s nose she knew immediately something was wrong. Abandoning her haul she had fled the scene as fast as she could reel in her harpoon and get her feet to kick away. She had realized that when the harpoon had gone the full distance of her rope, that she had provoked something much larger than herself. That is when the chase had begun and continued, now four hours after initial contact.
It was another hour of swimming before she could finally see the tell-tale signs of an island beneath her. The rising ocean floor, a coral reef coming up before her, and when she popped her head out of the water for a second the sight of a bulge on the water, all of these told her that her destination was nearing. And not soon enough, after five hours of swimming she was growing weary. The shark and her had not swam at full speed for the majority of the chase, both understanding how they would win this encounter they had decided to save their strength. But now with her goal in sight Merle gathered what remained of her energy and put on speed. Flying fish were some of the fastest creatures in the see, like them as a Flying Fish Fishwoman she had speed to match that at full sprint. Her streamline form careened through the water building distance between her and the shark that now also sped up.
But now with her goal in view, Merle would not slow down. It did not matter if she ran out of steam in some number of minutes if she was only five minutes from shore. Her feet kicked rapidly pushing her body to faster and faster speeds. Two miles, a mile, a few hundred yards, the shoreline closed in quickly. Catching a wave her body flung itself into the air, spinning the wave had launched her through the sky and straight onto the sandy beach. Landing with a giant thud she looked up at the sky, no longer feeling the cool waters of the sea upon her body she knew she was safe. With a delighted yell Merle spoke
"SAFE!!!”
