Name of Island: Nocturnia
Size of Island: About the same size as upper yard in Skypiea
Location: High Sky Island in Reflection Route
Inhabitants: Nocturnians- A sister race of the Skypieans, the Nocturnians migrated to this island and adapted to its bright and hot days by becoming nocturnal. Where the Skypieans have Angelic feathery wings, the Nocturnian wing is more bat-like, giving them more of devilish than angelic appearance (Which is ironic since Nocturnia is at a higher altitude than Skypiea, thus closer to the heavens). They also have sensitive eyesight and find it harder to deal with bright light, but see better in the dark.
Despite their supposedly more evil appearance, the Nocturnians are a friendly and generous people, ready help anyone out.
Town(s)/Village(s)/City or Cities: Serene Arcade- The town of Nocturnia, it is a long cave underground that is lit by glowing flowers. Inside the inhabitants have built houses and shops and it looks like a night time mall when walking through. Dials are available here, and they also sell various kinds of luminescent flowers and mushrooms to be used as torches.
Flora and Fauna: Owls- Being a nocturnal island, it has become home to many varieties of owl’s, which can range from as small as a mouse to as big as a bear, depending on variety, some of note include;
Cave Owl: A strange, weak eyed owl that has followed the bat’s example and developed a sort of sonar screech, so it can hunt without the use of its eyes.
Teenowl: Tiny owls the same size as a mouse or small bird, they’re sometimes kept as pets and wild ones tend to scavenge and burrow around the town of Serene Arcade.
Bear Owl: A huge owl the size of a bear but tamed none the less. Some might say too friendly since they tend to mother small creatures like children or small animals. Since they are (mostly) harmless, this large creatures are treated like livestock for the Nocturnians.
Luminous Flora: All of the plant life on Nocturnia is dormant during the day, and at night blooms with glowing flower petals like neon lights.
Often the natural plants here are sold to adventurers to create an quick and renewable torch.
Island History: The inhabitants of this island were originally Skypieans, who had set out from Skypiea to find a new home, roughly 1000 years ago.
This was possibly because they didn’t agree with the Kami system in place in Skypiea, since no such system exists in Nocturnia. Legends say that then Nocturnian ancestors were so awed by the beautiful night blooming plants on the island that they decided to make it their home. This awe, combined with the unpleasant conditions of daytime Nocturnia, encouraged them to become nocturnal humanoids, living underground and only going to the surface at night time.
It is believed for one reason or another that a Kami of Skypiea had them excommunicated and erased from the records of Skypiea, since they do not appear at all in Skypiean history, but Nocturnian history does still mention Skypiea. With them being cut off from their other sky dwelling brothers, the Nocturnian’s became isolated and didn’t again receive outsiders until ships began exploring the Grand Line.
Their new lifestyle had quickly affected their appearance, as the brighter winged individuals tended to become targets of the then wild Bear Owls. Gradually the bear owls were tamed and the Nocturnians lost their bright plumage, instead replaced by dark, bat-like wings. Initially the explorers were shocked by their strange appearance but the Nocturnian’s friendly ways quickly won them over.
Although Nocturnia is a sky island and therefore hard for people to visit, it is still mentioned in several journals of famous explorers.
