A free thinking and confident young woman with noticeable charm one way or another, at her best Ruby Roberts is self-reliant and courageous, but at her worst can be rather lax and tends to get lost in bad habits. A lover of banter and the art of witty conversation, she's often the sort to be cracking jokes and teasing her friends in comfortable company, and can seem to be the sort who can be a bit rebellious and discourteous toward certain forms of authority. The type who seems to believe respect is something to be earned and not expected, she'd likely welcome someone who came to her with an interesting or impressive reputation but would also be rather dismissive of those who believe they hold influence without the facts to back it up, though is happy to revise her opinion based on experience.
Initially presenting the kind of image of a person who is impulsive and driven by her feelings more than anything, while this is certainly true about Miss Roberts, it is far from the whole truth. Not quite as open about what she feels as she would have you believe or at the very least far more guarded about the more sensitive areas of her emotional spectrum, whilst aspects of her psyche such as excitement, anger or base desire are readily apparent, she can have a habit of hiding and bottling up her more complicated feelings.
Guarding her need for intimacy quite carefully and taking some time to show any level real of trust in people, this jaded young woman rolls with the punches and throws a few of her own, feeling it’s better to put up a tough front than let people know how much things get to her. Lonely but unable to admit it to people because she would feel too vulnerable and ‘weak’ to ever ask for the attention and affection of other people, despite her fiery nature she can be somewhat reluctant to show much warmth toward people and tends to deflect and distract if she feels she is becoming exposed.
Apparently possessing an odd mix of daring and relaxed personality, while she might be a bit cheeky and mischievous at times Ruby rarely puts on or tolerates airs and graces, and has the kind of tough attitude that means she would tend to be more amused by notions like chivalry than appreciative of them given her usual autonomy. Often the sort of person who enjoys banter with her buddies, she warms up better to those who can exchange thick skinned jabs more so than a person who flatters her, and tends to be rather forward with her interest in others when someone seems to seize her interest.
Appearing to enjoy ‘worthy challengers’ in this regard she will tend to warm up to those she can share a little bit of clever banter with more quickly, and alongside feeding her ego this can be a good way to earn a place in her good graces. Also tending to use humour as a method of deflection and distraction when she feels exposed or stressed, she can be flippant in the face of danger because of this, and at times can cause others frustration since she seems to crack wise and look for a smile in situations that would make others panic.
In a good mood the type of person who can be playful if rather dry witted and even somewhat flirtatious with the right people, or the wrong people, Ruby can take time to bond with people and even when she has done can be somewhat flippant, seeming to communicate more through bravado and banter than honest expressions of her feelings. The cheeky sort who expresses her fondness for people with teasing comments and at times bawdy mannerisms, she would hope any ‘friend’ would see that the warmth she shows in these things conveys her affection, but at times can be guilty of exploiting both her mind and her looks to get what she desires. More egotistical than she appears and perhaps a bit territorial as well, she has a shade of vanity and seems to dislike it when her allure and appeal is ignored, or worse overshadowed.
Indulgent of her vices and perhaps more callous of the people around her than she cares to admit, there are times when she can be selfish in her desires in spite of occasions of guilt that follow, and sometimes Ruby can also be a little guilty of pushing her jokes and mischief too hard. Often the type who likes to mess with people and play little mind games, she gets a sense of satisfaction for running rings around people or drawing redness in others cheeks, and this quality is only emphasized with those she takes a liking to. In some ways a little on the 'schoolyard' side in this regard, it would be fair to say the people she likes the most are usually the ones she likes to get a rise from, and at times this can make her seem quite the vixen; almost acting as if she wants to draw them into a chase and be run down.
Perhaps in this aspect presenting herself something of a hurdle toward forming deep and meaningful connections with others, her flippant manner and desire to avoid showing vulnerability can at times make her seem callous and distant, and certainly can make bonding with her something of an obstacle. Fearing loss more than anything else, Miss Roberts habitually walls herself off from others and seems to compensate for a lack of emotional intimacy by presenting a fun loving and permissive attitude in other areas, and yet is a total commitment-phobe.
Remembering the bad marriage her parents had and seeming to have lost or pushed away the people she loved, this redhead seems to dread the idea of being dragged down or shackled by a relationship, and often denies the depth of her affection because of this. More of a softy than she lets on and far more romantic than she would ever admit, she cherishes the company of those she cares about and seems to just hate the labels folk seemed to insist on applying, and feels her greatest levels of regret for letting the people she once cherished leave her life.
That being said indeed very capable of acts of great detachment and ruthlessness, Ruby seems to retain a somewhat 'greyed' morality and pragmatic approach to most situations, which is no doubt developed due to the amount of time she has spent in her life near pirates and other outlaws. Always the type that seems to seek to maximize her gains or achieve the most with minimal effort, she can command her charm and witty capacity through things like seduction to achieve what ends she desires, or can be brutally blunt in how she deals with people so long as doing so suits her aims, and seems to very much believe the ends justify the means as far as she's concerned for most matters.
Certainly the cynical sort, Miss Roberts tends to show a jaded and somewhat pragmatic attitude toward the situations she encounters, sometimes coming off as a little lacking for thoughtfulness in regard to the beliefs of others. A realist, she tends to favour material needs and concerns above lofty ideals, prioritizing things like income and stability over high minded ideals and dreams, yet in spite of this she seems to retain just a nugget of longing to go 'back' to something a little more innocent in her mind-set. Though she knows that's impossible.
Carrying a hell of a temper when someone is stupid enough to provoke it, while Miss Roberts is not all that easy to anger when she does become enraged it is like flipping a switch, and in more ways than one. Not the type who shouts or vents or acts off the heat of her passion but rather emphasizing her callousness in a manner which is vengeful and vindictive, she tends to lash out in a manner that seems almost composed, but can be cruelly vicious. Seeming to seek to crush those who anger her in more ways than one, while her fury may draw a violent approach she tends to exact her revenge through psychological means as well, and would seek to trounce and humiliate a foe both physically and mentally because of that. The tendency she has to bottle things up also meaning she holds grudges as well, while some things might just be treated to a catty attitude the more cerebral tendencies of this scarlet siren can make her patient and persistent in her wrath, and she can sometimes bide her time to maximize the 'reward' in how she dishes out her reprisals.
Appearance
A tall and slender woman with radiant red hair, Ruby Roberts is a woman with a fine figure and favours fashion that shows this off. Having a rather narrow and delicate looking face, Miss Roberts has irises that are bright and speak of both her self-confidence and sharp wit, being blue with just a dash of green which the right light can emphasize, whilst her overall facial structure is pleasingly fox-like. Sporting lips that are naturally rosy even without being coloured, this crimson coquette has a noticeable pout that only seems to add to her model-like good looks.
Fair of complexion but not quite so much that it might become off-putting, Miss Roberts has the kind of complexion that can make her look like quite the vamp, and knows how to play this up perfectly. Tending to be more subtle in her choices of makeup as a sign of her maturity, she rarely wears heavy eyeshadow though frames her eyes with eye liner and the effect of long and dark lashes, she plays up her innate good looks rather well and as such highlights her cheekbones and sometimes if she feels she needs it her plump pout.
Sporting long, auburn hair that she tends to wear loosely most often, her fiery mane is a little wavy and are long enough to reach her back, and styled with long bangs which she usually sweeps over to hang over one side of her face or sometimes more messily over her eye. Often using dyes to really emphasize the Ruby red tone of her hair though not too disheartened when these fade and she shows more of warm amber tone, there is often a slightly dishevelled and wild air about her image, which matches that untamed flame tone she takes to her hair. Not confined in her style however and happy to mix it up and wear her hair in different manners if the occasions calls for it, while she appreciates the freedom of loose hair Ruby ties her hair when she needs to in simple tails for exercise or perhaps in buns or knots if she wishes to wear it elegantly for a special occasion.
A girl who is down to earth and perhaps a scant tomboyish, Ruby tends to be the sort who wears pants more often than she does a skirt or dress, though that is not to say she wouldn't wear either of those if the mood struck her. Possessing more vanity than one might have guessed and usually opting for tight clothing to demonstrate this, not only does she know she looks good but she also tends to enjoy the ego boost of having someone note her appearance, and honestly finds it quite the thrill to note how she can make people around her flustered with her image, and delights in picking up on physical and mental clues as to this fact.
The pride that Miss Roberts has in her appearance also making her rather daring when she puts the effort in, so to speak, when she chooses to glam herself up she tends to enjoy trendy and revealing clothing in one way or another, wearing short skirts or even plunging necklines, and tends to show some shamelessness in how she enjoys calling attention to her fine physique. Piercing her ears and naval, she often wears hoop earrings in the former which lurch from those flowing red locks in gold or silver, though depending on her outfit might prefer to wear gems that match her eyes or diamonds that dazzle, and she also possesses a fondness for high heels which only further emphasize her height and long legs either in shoe or more commonly boot form.

Fighting Styles
Name:– Redeye
Focus:– Firearms, Accuracy and Trick Shots
Class:– E
Description:– Specializing in gunplay, Ruby is rarely without a firearm in hand and favours dual pistols, though can roll with pretty much any form of shooting weapon in a crunch. Accurate and scarily so, the simple stopping power of the average gun more than makes up for an absence of raw physical power on her side, so she has trained herself to put this to best use by making sure her bullets hit when she needs to, even if she needs to pull off special shots to ensure this.
Name:– Redzone
Focus:– Close Combat, Striking
Class:– E
Description:– Learning as a young pirate that some might have the skill or luck to encroach near enough to make her guns a moot point, Ruby has integrated striking techniques to defend herself in close combat situations, and can exploit that same focus she has for shooting to make sure her kicks and occasional pistol whips count for plenty.
Techniques
Name:– Rico-shot
Fighting Style:– Redeye
Rank:– 1
Description:– Mastering the art of the rebound, Ruby has learned to exploit hard surfaces and the joys of geometry to hit targets using ricocheting shots, enabling her to strike against those behind cover or perhaps quick or evasive enough to dodge a more conventional approach.
Name:– Re-Coil
Fighting Style:– Redeye
Rank:– 1
Description:– A crafty evasive move, Ruby can use the kick her guns give when firing to shift her weight and momentum on the fly, enhancing her acrobatics further, and earning even greater rewards if she hits a target while doing so.
Name:– Pistol Whip
Fighting Style:– Redzone
Rank:– 1
Description:– Exploiting the recoil of her shot to enhance a close combat move, Ruby fires off a round in the opposite direction and exploits the kick this gives her gun in addition to the strength she can throw into her attack to deliver a swiping move upon her target.
Name:– High Heel
Fighting Style:– Redzone
Rank:– 1
Description:– Performing a kick which shows off some rather impressive flexibility, Ruby can deliver a snapping hit with her foot which appears visually like a vertical splits with her legs, allowing her to effectively 'uppercut' a foe nearby with her toe or drive it down hard upon them.
Name:– Astaire-way
Fighting Style:– Redzone
Rank:– 1
Description:– Rallying out a series of sharp kicks, Ruby can focus these on a single target in combination to overwhelm them or snap out a hit to a few targets depending how she aims, making for a versatile offense.
Equipment
Name:– Annie & Mary
Fighting Style:– Redeye & Redzone
Rank:– 1
Description:– Customized pistols, these dual guns are identical and have been enhanced with Wootz Steel housing which makes them heavier, but far more durable than the average firearm. This allows Ruby to use them for hand to hand weapons without worrying about damaging or deviating their barrels, she can use them to deflect or even break the blade of a sword thanks to their weight and the bludgeoning ability they offer.
Name:– Ace in the Whole
Fighting Style:– Redeye
Rank:– 0
Description:– A compact pistol which is easy to conceal, while it doesn't pack a whole lot of power due to the low calibre Ruby keeps the gun hidden on her person in a variety of ways, providing her with a backup weapon if she needs it or something she can sneak into locales where her larger and heavier pair would not be permitted.
Name:– Witt
Fighting Style:– Redzone
Rank:– 0
Description:– A razor sharp knife which acts as Ruby's sidearm, while she isn't terribly proficient with bladed weaponry in her opinion it is always useful to have it to use as an option for close combat or a tool to help her get out of scrapes.
Background
Born into a family which lived in a port that lay in the middle of nowhere, Ruby's early life was nothing all that remarkable. Her dad a sailor in the merchant navy while her mother waiting tables in a bar, she was one of five children who grew up in a small and cramped house, who stood out for her fiery hair and brassy attitude.
The latter the result of growing up with four brothers, Ruby learned at a young age that if you wanted something, even peace and quiet, one had to fight for it. Money always tight and bigger and stronger figures happy to bully her out of anything she found in her pocket, the atmosphere was often comptitive and fiesty, and with dad away and ma too busy to take care of themselves the kids looked after themselves. An underlying loyalty existing however, you looked after your own in this house, so as much as the lads would pick on their sister they also seemed protective of her, though whether this was the reason for them chasing away the boys she liked or simple pettiness is open to interpretation.
Home not easier for the state of her parents' marriage, though her mother was a loyal woman she was also a paranoid one, though ultimately perhaps with good reason. Dad a rogue and something of a charmer, Ruby took after him a lot, and her mother never seemed to quite trust either at home or especially when he was away.
Always seeming to be 'overreacting' to him chatting up a girl somewhere, her fears were realized when one day out of the blue a girl with a baby in her arms turned up at their door looking for him, and she found out that dad had been having at least one affair with someone near one of his regular stop-offs. This enough to get him thrown out of the house for good, he ended up living with the new lass in his life though did what he could do send some of what he made to his kids, showing at least some responsibility in spite of how it seemed his new flame wanted to keep all that wage to herself.
This not much of a surprise given how bad the career prospects were for a lass who lived in this part of town, as Ruby grew older and wiser she knew that she would either be stuck in a dead end job or made into a wife if she stayed, or worse of all both, while some of her friends seemed to dream of catching the eye of a wealthy man from the richer parts of town or even abroad, Ruby set her sights a little grander. Knowing she had to get out of there and see the world, one of the few things she loved about her home life was the stories dad brought back of distant horizons, and these were what she longed to see with her own two eyes.
Joining the marines because of this at the tender age of only sixteen, she was taken on as a seaman recruit and seemed to spend the early part of her career doing much the same as she wanted to avoid; cleaning floors and peeling potatoes, and largely feeling like she was more remarkable for her looks than what she could do or where she had been. However, she opted to be patient and persistent, or just too stubborn to go back home to her brothers teasing of her 'failure', and steadily won herself a promotion to apprenticeship as a result.
Trained in the barracks because of this, it was clear that living with a bunch of sweaty lads was nothing new to her after all given the cramped space in which she had been raised, though she had no particular knack for seamanship beyond a few basics her dad had passed on to all his kids she was happy to learn more, and thrilled to try her hand at combat. Never forgetting the feeling of power she felt when she picked up a rifle and sent a bullet whizzing from it to the end of the range, though her initial attempts were nothing to write home about practice helped with that, and steadily she began to show improvement. In fact, it didn't take all that long for her to start winning some respect from her peers, for one reason or another.
Admired by many for her ravishing red locks and blossoming beauty but always feeling like one of the lads, she felt at home in a bar drinking with the boys or playing cards and the like, and frankly felt the happiest she ever had in her life. Certainly not everyone keen on the pranks she pulled or the little gambling rings and offbeat bets she set up and this reflected in a somewhat sedate climb up the chain of command, for a time Ruby was happy enough to simply have a place on a ship and a chance to move toward some new tide, yet as her skills increased and commandants changed this came into question.
Reaching the rank of petty officer and then even chief as she broke through into her twenties, while some questioned her fun loving attitude and commitment to the ideals of the marines an expert gunner and capable close combat fighter seemed always an asset, and she dragged herself over the hurdles of rank through commendation in battle. A decent leader in fact when given the chance, she was bold and bright in her strategies when commanding her fellows and assigned to a post in the grand line because of this, but unfortunately this seemed to ultimately prove the undoing of her marine career.
Finding herself on the first island in a route of ‘paradise’ that the Marines dominated, Arabara, there seemed to be no end of Pirates who lurched over Reverse Mountain and into the Grand Line looking for prize and prestige. The ones that were sent toward Arabara being considered unlucky because of this fact but few seeming to realize at first, not a week went by without some sort of enterprising sea dog showing up, and while the smart ones seemed to sneak past without causing trouble the prideful couldn't see that blue gull and not want to leave their mark on it.
This not often seeming to be the brightest move but frequently making for exciting times for Ruby, the girl did battle with strong and troublesome pirate crews and gradually managed to adapt to the level. In her own way feeling something like a sense of respect for the brassy dogs who showed up and barked at her, while the higher ranking officers stationed seemed to make short work of almost all, the redhead couldn't help but admire that courage and their untamed passion.
Yet, she did not see her rank climb much further despite the feats she performed or the crews she helped to route here, in spite of the effort she put into her work and the lofty targets she managed to bring down. Unfortunately, for all the fun of the fighting and everything else that came with the assignment there was one big negative about her new locale; the commander of her squad.
Placed under the authority of the then Lieutenant who her fellows came to affectionately dub 'Ratface', this selfish man seemed to send his underlings to face death and then claim the spoils himself, and falsified reports even after he cowered behind the backs of his men and claimed the lion's share of the credit. Somehow his only real skill being in deceiving his superiors, he knew which boots to lick and which pockets to line, and especially his own in the case of the latter.
Some that slipped by realizing that it was much easier to pay a toll to the shady young officer who would make sure a whole was poked in their coverage in exchange for a tidy profit, savvy smugglers and pirates exploited this, and he even made sure to shift the blame to anyone onto anyone at the bottom of his shit list in order to cover his own back. After all, it was easy to shift the emphasis onto someone who, according to reports, had a problem with authority and following orders, wasn't it?
More than a few men dying under his command due to his dastardly behaviour, as his Marines would fight hard to quell threats their cowardly commander would bark orders from the furthest distance he could, and usually the wrong ones. Ruby taking great issue with this, the man offered her the chance to sit back and climb the ranks with him, provided she become his lover of course. Needless to say she refused, and because of this, Ratface made sure to keep her rank and pay down probably in an effort to twist her to reconsider.
Buddying up with her fellow squad members who were all suffering similar treatment from their commander, Ruby became rather close to a fellow Marine by the name of Pace, and even became lovers. Unfortunately, their relationship was cruelly cut short when the foolishness of their commanding officer led to Pace’s death, in a situation that always felt too shady to be an accident as well. For Miss Redd, this was the final straw. Unleashing one hell of a blow on Ratface, she flattened him to the joy of her colleagues. Yet he would be just as vindictive with her as he could anyone else.
More than equipped to bump her back down a couple of ranks for such dastardly behaviour thanks to the resulting court martial, Ruby found herself as a seaman first class, and reassigned back to the blues as well. Dumped on a lowly patrol ship in disgrace, though it was bothersome to be busted down at least she got away from Ratface, which was probably a good thing. After all, she wanted to kill him. Yet, in spite of her intent to slide back up the ranks she was met with frustration for the fail that followed.
Her new ship commanded by a foppy fool of an officer who was just as much of an idiot as Ratface but lacking even his savvy, he seemed to have achieved his position simply by virtue of having the right parent in the right place, and spent his days ham fisting assignments and being carried by his team. Truly a disaster at ambush operations and bringing in wanted men, her squad became a marine joke as they bore the brunt of his misdoing, and left Ruby wondering if she should just quit. Yet, even if she did, she had no idea what she would do afterward.
Guided in that aim by an unlikely source in fact, Ruby happened to be assigned guard duty over a recently captured pirate known as the bear as he was being moved for incarceration at a more secure facility, and fell into a conversation with him because of this. Certainly the start of their chat seeming to revolve around vulgar topics but end with discussion of his escape, some part of the girl could tell he was sweet talking her because of the fate he faced, but frankly the freedom of the sea he spoke of seemed reason enough to turn in her commission and help him escape.
Springing him from his cell as she brought one of her cohorts a spiked drink while the guy watched over their prize on the night shift, the two stole away in a rowboat as they drifted close to an island in the moonlight, and soon after were even thicker as theives. There something exciting about this untamed figure and also something charming, what started as a fling became a whirlwind romance and a pirate partnership, and once more Ruby felt like she was having the time of her life.
Adopting the surname of 'Redd' since it suited her lifestyle better, her flaming hair and dead eye shooting earned her the nickname of 'red dead', and frankly it was nice to get some proper recognition for what she had been doing. People knew the name, which was more than could be said for [insert rank here' Roberts, that was for sure.
Staying loyal to her new man as well though not entirely by specific design, weeks turned into months and then even more than a year passing, and excitement and habit meant that they dipped into and out of operations and ran robberies side by side, and by the time she had a price on her head the pair were very much in love. Though, unfortunately, that was a fact that Ruby had a hard time acknowledging, let alone admitting.
Certainly seeming to feel like she had never 'clicked' with anyone quite like her blondie baby but plagued by issues of commitment, she probably could have spent the rest of her life drifting with him and thought of no one else, they even had plans to birth their own crew together, but then he went and did something stupid. Clearly just as smitten with her and doing something dumb because of that, something as innocent as her taking a liking to a fancy diamond ring they had liberated from some wealthy woman on a cruise ship led to a joke of proposal, except the meaning became increasingly sincere.
This terrifying Ruby given her own reservations on marriage given how things had gone with her parents, all she wanted to was drift the sea on her whims and wits, and so the prospect of union with another regardless of who they were felt more like a shackle to her than anything. Hating the idea of getting tied down and lumbered with kids and the like when she was barely more than one herself, she scoffed at the idea and turned him down because of this, and seemed to burst the balloon they had been riding because of that.
Trying to keep things going as they had of course but this moment seeming like a hole in the bottom of their relationship that would not be plugged, Ruby couldn't help but feel she needed to distance herself to hang onto her feeling of freedom, and likely only served to further hurt her beau because of the rejection in that. All too aware of it as well and the guilt only making her feel worse, ultimately she jumped on an offer to join the crew of another without him, since he wanted his own gang and she found it harder and harder to not feel burdened by guilt.
Going their separate ways but Ruby feeling regret for doing so, the news of her lover's success felt bittersweet in the aftermath since while she was glad to see him flourishing she could sense a fury in what he chose to do with his command, and one that she guessed she had added to in no small part. This sense of guilt only worsening when without her more tempered hand he seemed to thrust himself into the depths of danger and fail to surface again, Ruby's guilt was only worsened when she heard the news he had seemingly been killed in a ferocious battle and she took action because of this.
Hardly able to believe the headline when she saw that he had been lost, up until that point she honestly didn't think anything could have quelled that fire and ferocity once he got going, and as such she couldn't help but attempt to intervene. Compelled by doubt and perhaps wishful thinking to search the site of the battle and the surrounding lands for sign of the man she had once known, Ruby longed to see him alive and perhaps assuage some guilt she felt for pushing him go as well given how things had ended between them and ever more this supposed 'finale', and as a result she spent months searching and asking after him. Yet she never did find what she had been looking for, and ultimately had to accept he really was gone, even if she didn't want to believe that.
Only seeming to indulge bad habits all the more in an effort to soothe the ill feeling this gave her, she couldn’t help but feel like the sea was a lonelier place for the loss, and it took her time to get over it in truth, feeling as though she a member of her family had been taken away. This taking her no short time to get over and perhaps ironically seeming to emphasize similar symptoms in her as what had driven her from her love, she pulled away from people and relied on money and excitement to get her blood pumping, while the pleasures of the flesh were all that offered her intimacy. After all, it was hard to feel like she could trust herself to get close to others when she had killed the only man she ever loved, wasn't it?
Treading water somewhat because of that, at least metaphorically, even with a respectable bounty resting on her head she has taken to living as something of a drifter, not putting down roots anywhere for too long because she can't help but feel like there's something out there to be found. With that in mind managing to sweet talk a nice and serviceable boat to roam the seas in, she now lives out of a simple craft she can operate solo as she lives as a smuggler and sellsword, and tries not to be as much of a party girl as she was. Though, isn't always successful…
