Sylas’ first response to her admission was a frown, but it wasn’t one of anger. Quite the opposite, he felt her sadness in her comment as he knew what it was like to be chasing ghosts with no reliable leads, only a desperate desire to reach one’s goal.
However, with the next reveal, his soft expression faded into one mixed with confusion and suspicion. As he raised an eyebrow, Bella’s sudden silence confirmed what he just suspected - her brother was a bit of a shady character, to say the least. This either meant she would also be following in his footsteps and becoming a criminal as well, or he had changed. Judging by his absence right now, he was guessing it was not the latter.
Bella went on to reveal that he was under employment of some ‘mysterious noble’, a wealthy patron, no doubt, who must have been looking for some quick solution to a problem relating to this cruiser or the people on it... if the girl’s brother really fit that job description, maybe it was for the better if she didn’t find him. One thing was for certain as Sylas watched her through narrowed eyes...
...I should not be getting involved in any of this.
Then there was another look of horror, but this time it was not on Bella’s face but on Sylas’ as he realised how close to crying the girl was while she rambled on about having no luck. She seemed to be pulling in phrases from all over the place, jumping from one point to another, and her offer to assist him seemed to come from nowhere. Finally, the sudden outburst came from the girl’s mouth as she pleaded with him not to hate her, seeming to assume that what her brother got himself up to was enough to sway him to dislike her - or like her, for that matter.
Raising two hands in a reassuring manner, he tried to calm her down. “No, no, I don’t hate you.” he quickly said, hoping to prevent the waterfalls that he predicted would soon be flowing from her eyes if he didn’t do something soon. Nervously bringing one of his two other hands up to the edge of the table, he miscalculated and his palm slammed on the table a bit more aggressively than he intended to. Sylas was a skilled navigator when it came to sailing the seas... less so when it involved a woman’s feelings. This was a cause for concern and panic.
People at nearby tables were starting to look in their direction, seeing that something was clearly wrong. Glancing at one elderly couple not very far away, Sylas offered them a sheepish smile, then turned back to Bella, “I don’t hate you. Look, I don’t care what your brother did or didn’t do, it isn’t any of my business...” he sighed, and wondered if a distraction would help keep her from crying, “Yeah, sure. You can help me if you want to! Why not?”
Why not? How about WHY!? This is a bad idea, but what was I supposed to do? If I didn't say something, I would be swimming in her tears right now, just look at her!
