Hanzo smiled at Phaeton, looking a little relieved and a little repentant for his earlier outburst. Ammy’s eyes darted back and forth between the two of them. Hanzo nodded as Phae explained their intentions. “It won’t be any trouble. I have a spacious enough house. Don’t feel like you need to rush out on my account. While our village is…” Hanzo trailed off, searching for the right word, “...hesitant to welcome outsiders, I promise you they’re all good people.”
“Hm? Ah… Hrm…” Hanzo’s brow furrowed at Phaeton’s question. Ammy’s face looked worried as her eyes darted around before finally looking down. The two natives stood in silence for a moment with Hanzo searching for a way to explain everything. It was actually Ammy who broke the silence first, digging around in her sleeve to pull out a black slate. Hanzo blinked and stared in surprise as Ammy scribbled away.
My father is the leader of our clan, the slate said as she held it up to Phaeton before wiping the chalk away and sidling up to Phae so that they could watch as she wrote. He is a great leader, beloved by our people, but with me, he…
Ammy paused, her lip trembling a little and her eyes scrunching up painfully.
He thinks that I need to be protected. From everything.
Letting out an almost silent sigh, Ammy’s shoulders slumped. In truth, her feelings on her father were quite complicated. Even more complicated were her feelings on the consequences of his actions. Ammy slowly wiped away the words on the slate, thinking about how to explain them. Really, it came down to one thing.
Everyone treats me differently. I am-
Ammy paused again, glancing at Hanzo. She shielded the slate from Hanzo’s eyes with a sleeve and leaned into Phaeton as she wrote the last word.
-lonely.
She paused so that Phae had a chance to read it before she wiped the slate clean once more and lowered it to her side. Sensing that she was finished, Hanzo cleared his throat, having pointedly turned away when Ammy had not so subtly indicated that she didn’t want him to read the slate.
“Yes, Lady Amateratsu is the only daughter of Lord Izanagi. Lady Amaterasu is a ray of sunshine for our people. He.. We only want to ensure her safety. We never know if outsiders have good intentions, so we opt to remain guarded and cautious. It’s not personal, master Phaeton.”
“That being said, Lord Izanagi is managing the affairs of our clan elsewhere at the moment,” Hanzo continued, his hand waving idly, “So it is unlikely word of your visit will reach his ears until you are long gone.”
Hanzo raised his eyebrows at the two, hoping that they caught his insinuation. Ammy seemed to, her eyes sparkling. She was too bright. Hanzo almost felt like he had to shield his eyes from her unbridled joy and gratitude for him.
