A ferry headed to Aityaia’s major port was drawing close to its destination. Ridley stood on the deck, holding a brochure in his hands. He flipped it over and looked down at the advertisement that had brought him to the island. A distinctively HG Project pod had been made into a major attraction. Which meant that they finally had another solid lead to go on. Somewhere on this island would be another of them. Ridley took a deep breath to steady his nerves.
He turned his head slightly to see one of the crew walk up beside him and lean over the railing. The man gave Ridley a smile, which the doctor returned if a little less certain. Most people gave him a wide berth due to the bandages and his odd eye coloration. They probably thought that he was diseased. It was probably better that they think that than know the truth of it. So, it was with cautious optimism that he regarded the sailor.
“Howdy! What brings you to Aityaia? Business or pleasure?”
“Ah...business? I’m afraid to say.”
“Oh?” the sailor gestured at the brochure in his hands, “You sure? What kind of business?”
“O-Oh! Well, I suppose a bit of pleasure as well. I’m a doctor by trade, you see,” Ridley explained, “But in between appointments, I planned to sight see a little.”
“Ah, I see, I see! Well, I hope you enjoy your stay for what it’s worth, Doc. People have been flocking to the place recently to see that thingy. It’s a real mystery! Any idea what it could be?”
“I… I couldn’t say,” Ridley replied carefully, hiding his anxiety at the question.
“Hm-hm! I heard it fell outta the sky with something in it! You know… I think it’s aliens. Or sky people,” the sailor whispered conspiratorially before pushing off the rail, “Anyway, I just came over to ask ya to take yer seat. We’ll be pulling up to port soon.”
“O-Oh! Of course! So sorry.”
Ridley took his seat, and in short order, the ship pulled into port. He was quick to disembark, giving a friendly farewell to the sailor that had seen fit to chat with him before walking into town proper. He had a couple things that he needed to take care of - retrieving the documents and hormones from the pod was one thing - but the main thing he was worried about was the HG who had landed here. The brochure had an islandwide bounty for the mysterious figure that had arrived in the pod, which made Ridley worry.
It was a quick walk to the attraction, which had been brought into a hastily constructed museum for public viewing at a price. He asked a few questions, but it seemed like the hunt was still very much ongoing. Good. At least these people hadn’t found them yet. Though, Ridley was worried as always about Dr. Moreau potentially coming after them.
Spending an hour or two gathering up supplies to trek into the jungle, Ridley was finally ready to set off. He didn’t really have a plan or strategy. He wasn’t very adept at tracking. Blair and Lee were better at those sorts of things, but he’d left them behind for their own safety. If Dr. Moreau or his people were here, he didn’t want to risk them. Walking into the jungle, it wasn’t long before he left the sounds of the city behind. It was amazing how quickly nature overtook civilization. Ridley cleared his throat and started to call out.
“Hello? Anyone there? I’m a friend!”
