The Sky King was now just meters behind them, but they were quickly approaching the exit. There was no time to waste! Picking Lily up, Charon held her in his arms as they ran, breathing heavily and preparing for what he was about to do. They had entered a larger part of the cave that was more open and held piles upon piles of bones, plants, and other debris that had fallen down there at one point or another. The entrance to the next layer was clearly visible on the other side of the opening, and there were several soft looking balls of moss lurking just on the inside of it. That was what he needed to aim for. He glanced back at the scale on his back and noticed the Sky king had clamped its jaws shut and was starting to speed up, no doubt intending to crush them now that he had more room to move. It was now or never! A look of sadness crossed Charon’s face as he took Lily in his hands followed by a forced, strained smile.
“I’m sorry, Lily…” Holding Lily like a large rock, Charon tossed her with all of his might towards the moss balls. “.. But you have to keep going!” As she soared through the air, Charon turned around and stumbled backward toward the exit, holding the scale like a shield to cushion the impending blow. If he survived this, he would undoubtedly have several injuries, but it was worth it. Time seemingly slowed as the beast approached and Charon all but accepted his fate. Lily had to be safe now, right? He had only hoped to not miss the throw. Even if he perished, at least she could continue their goal, right? Her dream… was to see the blues. He didn’t have any goals worth mentioning. He just wanted to get back down to the blues so he could continue his journey.
Time continued forward as Charon closed his eyes, but instead of being swallowed whole, the Sky King crashed into him, shattering the scale and sending him flying back towards the entrance of the next layer. Unfortunately, while the scale had absorbed most of the impact, the speed and direction which he was flying left no promise of a safe landing. Instead of hitting one of the moss balls, Charon crashed into a wall inside the entrance, but too far from the moss balls to soften the blow. He could feel some of his bones crack and bruises cover his body, but he was alive. After several moments of near-unconscious silence, painful groans left his body as he turned onto his back and grimaced in pain.
“Lily…? Please… tell me you’re still alive…”
