Charon closed his eyes in solidarity. It seemed it wasn’t just Lily that had given up hope, but the other person as well. So much so that they took their own life instead of looking for other ways out of this mess. Lily had never seen the blue sea, and she spoke of “Sky Kings”, no doubt a cousin of the Sea Kings from the blue sea. One might argue they were worse since they could fly, as most things this far up could.
“It’s sad to hear that someone you knew perished because of this place. Were you close? As for the Sky Kings… that just means we can’t be seen, yes? I do agree though… going without a plan sounds like a bad idea.”
Charon followed Lily, keeping his scythe on his back in case something happened. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust her, but he didn’t want the blade to cut anything in half by accident. When she led him to the stream, he looked around at the fish here. They didn’t have wings? And they simply lived up here in a stream, as normal fish? This would be easier than he thought! Fast or not, a fishman’s nature is to capture and eat fish!
“Fast fish, huh? This shouldn’t be too difficult. Would you mind if I borrowed that spear? My blade is just a bit too slow for something like this.”
That was a lie. The blade was made for cutting things, and water seemed no different, as it glided through it with ease. It was a bit of a hassle to swing around though, and he didn’t want to accidentally break anything, nor did he want to fillet the fish before they could get it back to Lily’s house. Besides the burden of carrying back multiple sticky pieces, the smell of the innards would make for a lousy trip.
When given the spear, Charon waited at the water’s edge with the spear readied. He left one foot in the water to feel its current and any shifts it might have because of the fish. Charon wasn’t the fastest fish in the west, but he was still a good hunter. He had no choice but to be. He likely wouldn’t have lived this long if he let the women of his city down with a lack of hunting skill. Waiting silently for a few moments, the spear in Charon’s hand launched forward at two sky fish swimming closely together and impaled them both on the end of the spear and into the ground. The back half of the spear stuck out of the water, waiting to be pulled out. As Charon grabbed and tugged it out of the water, he held out the spear to Lily with a blank face.
“Smooth as butter. Our dinner has been caught. Will this be enough for the night?”
