Lily let out a soft sigh. Dawn was breaking, and the early morning light was filtering in from above. The sky was a gentle indigo, growing lighter by the moment. With a soft grunt, Lily pushed herself up out of her cot. She’d made it herself from vines, branches and as much leaf litter as she could find. Even still, she always woke up feeling pretty stiff. Shaking her head, Lily watched as leaves lazily drifted out of her hair onto the ground.
“Time to get up,” Lily said to herself as she pushed herself to her feet.
Where Lily was living was nothing special. She’d made a home for herself underneath a rocky outcropping. She had a few things. Some tools lay neatly organized in a wicker basket. She also had her breakfast in one such basket. A collection of fruits, nuts, and vegetables scavenged from the forest. She plucked one out of the basket and took a big bite out of it, walking off into the verdant woods.
Her first stop was the stream. She finished eating there, took a drink and washed up. Slapping her face a couple times, Lily took a deep breath. Her days were routine now. Wake up, freshen up, check the tower, forage until lunch, eat lunch, scavenge parts until nightfall, eat dinner, sleep, repeat. So, she wandered until she reached the black spiral staircase that would lead her down to the aerie where she’d arrived. She checked every day to see if someone new had arrived.
There had only been one other person in the seven years that she’d been trapped here, and they had thrown themselves off after attempting to ascend to the next layer of Neverland. She supposed it was because they thought it was better than being stuck here forever. Heading down the stairs, the only sounds that greeted Lily were the roaring of the wind outside and the steady slap of her feet hitting cold stone.
It didn’t take her long to reach the bottom. Large arches opened up to the sky beyond. Lily stood inside the arches, but didn’t go out any further onto the landing. Every time she tried to go out there, she froze or jumped back inside. Even now, the cold chill of fear galloped down her spin and rooted her to the spot. She stood there, staring at the open sky.
