While he isn’t going to go out of his way for every loose beri he stumbles across, he is rather tight about spending from his own pocket and is always looking for the most profitable option he can procure.
-Perfection with the Imperfections: Growing up in a household that would always degrade him, Rio made a promise to always see the best in an individual, no matter what his own personal beliefs against said individual were. Unshakable Will: Once Rio sets himself on a goal, he is determined to see it to the end. Very little can deter him from trying to accomplish his present task or halt his grander ambitions.

Background:
From adolescence, a young Rio lived a life of poverty all to familiar to many who were also born in the North Blue like he was. His family always struggled to afford enough food to keep on the table with his father always trying to pawn off what little money they had trying his hand at foolish “get rich quick schemes”. Because of these hardships and always being down on their luck, Rio’s father would always take out his frustration on Rio and his mother, cursing them both for his own misfortunes. Rio always wished he and his mother could escape from this hellhole of a situation they were both stuck in with his father, but they wouldn’t make it far with the old man being the one bringing in all the money. Despite their lack of steady income, Rio’s mother still sought that Rio would receive a proper education, hoping that by getting educated, Rio could better himself so that he wouldn’t end up in the same situation they all currently found themselves in.
When Rio was about 12 years old, tragedy befell his family when his mother fell terribly ill after consuming enough near-rotting food. On her sickbed, the young boy had come to learn his mother was intentionally saving the best pieces of whatever food they could scavenge in order to provide for Rio. Rio demanded the doctors do something for her, but the cost of the medication was almost hundreds of times more than anything they could afford and her expected time given was running thin. Without any money to his name and growing desperate, Rio vowed he was gonna do whatever it took to get her the help she needed.
The next morning Rio approached a couple of his schoolmates who happened to be a part of the local gang in his town. He wanted to know what he could do to rake in the coin like they could. When they told him the grim tales of their exploits and what all it would entail, Rio did not hesitate for even a second to say he wanted in on it. They started small, nicking loose change from unaware citizens and the like, however, at the rate they were moving during the time, it wouldn’t be enough to save his mother. Rio then began to devise cleverer schemes, chasing bigger scores. Over a weeks time, between skipping meals and days of school, Rio and his partners in crime had managed to amass just enough to get his mother’s treatment.
With the last handful of berri in hand, Rio went to collect the rest of his savings from his secret stash, only to find a grizzly sight instead. Tucked away in his room his private stash had been discovered and all of the money he had theft was gone! Tears welled in Rio’s eyes as he practically flipped the entirety of his house over trying to locate the stolen money in a panic. He ran back to his mother at the hospital clenching whatever he had left from earlier. He burst into the building and bee-lined it for his mother’s bedside. He raised his fist to the doctor, throwing what little berri he had at them in a desperate plea to give his mother the medicine she needed. The doctor didn’t know how to explain it to the frantic child; His mother had died only moments prior to his arrival...
After an initial outburst of pleas and not understanding, Rio struggled to collect himself and regain his composure. The doctors tried to comfort him but he wasn’t having it. It was a tough reality to accept and he still hoped something could be done to help her. Almost an hour after Rio had arrived, the last of the Soldorado’s entered the room. Rio glared up to see his father standing in the doorway, uncaring green eyes staring right back at him. There was something off about him, however, something Rio spotted the moment he entered the room; the Old Man was wearing fine clothes, finer than anything they could have afforded. In that moment, it all clicked, it was him who took the money! Rio lashed out, screaming and cursing his father’s name, demanding he tell him where he got the money for those clothes. He wanted to hear it from him, he wanted him to admit it! His father stumbled over an excuse, which was enough to make the already frantic Rio grab the nearest sharp object in front of him and leap across the room at his father. What happened after was a blur, Rio only snapping back to reality just in time to avoid getting pulled away off his father by the doctors. He knew he had to run, he had to get away from all this now. He didn’t know where he’d go, just as long as it was far, far away from here.
After managing to avoid capture by jumping from town to town, Rio eventually managed to join up with some smalltime gangs to better hone his skills while he laid low and raked in some berri. He picked up knives as his weapon of choice and spent much of his time within the gang perfecting how to utilize them to serve as a constant reminder of the day he left everything in his hometown. Years went by working odd jobs and other gang related activities til he figured his best course of action would be to hire himself out as a mercenary. He set his sights toward the sea in the hopes to finally rid himself from the memories he had still attached to the island he had come to know as his home. While he started to travel abroad Rio began to find himself going fascinated with pirates, primarily the vast troves of treasures they had amounted, but also by the ideals and ambitions of each crew he had managed to meet. Sharing tales with these nautical bandits inspired Rio to reassess his goals a bit, the allure of Gold Roger’s Fortune could bring him both the wealth to rival nations as well as the notoriety to stand out amongst the others as a king; a King of the Pirates.
