The snow of the winter island was drifting down peacefully during the dark winters’ morning sky. The few people that were up and about on the dreary island of Sedna were the fisherman and farmers selling produce and their catch to the few townsfolk who wanted the freshest produce. For the time of day it was quite the hustle and bustle at the docks with plenty of people shimmying around one another to inspect what was available and what would work for the meals they had planned in their respective businesses or their families.
“Not much in the herbs and vegetable department. No spices… Just root vegetables” A foreign voice noted to himself as he walked between the market stalls. He had been told this was the best place on the island to get ingredients for making meals. However, this is just awful. Aside from the whalers and fishermen the rest of this market was dismal. “ ‘Scuse me Mate! Can I get a couple pounds of that whale meet, can you make sure there is a little skin and fat on it.” He called to a rather cantankerous looking old fisherman.
“Ehh? You want to use all of it? I got a bone I can toss in too, if yer wantin’ it?.” The grizzled old fisherman replied, like most locals he wasn’t fond of outsiders but one that offered business mustn’t be all that bad. “Total comes up-ta Sixty.” He called out as he moved one of the larger slabs of glistening red meat, the layer of white blubber on one side looking like a topping to a sushi from a distance, to a paper wrapping and then bagging it.
“Sixty is good my man.” Karr replied as he handed over a nice chunk of change to the man and in return took his new ingredient. “Ice Whale Meat broth might be a good dish to keep me going… maybe I can add some of that spice I got from Alabasta to give it a nice wallop.” He added on, thinking aloud to himself, already seeing what he could and could not do with his bounty of ingredients.
“That sounds like it’ll make a good meal lad. Tell me how it turns out if you see me again!” The eye patched man noted, watching his most recent customer pack his purchase away into a bag that had potatoes, leeks and a few more root-based vegetables in it. “See you around young’un!”
“See ya around, Old man!” Karr replied, with a friendly enough smile on his face. There was not much more the measly market could give him. Sedna may not be the place he was told it was when he asked for good places to get ingredients.
The larger man walked out of the market up the winding road in the dark, it was a nice morning for a change. Something that took him back to memories of the past that both warmed his heart and made it sink. ‘You will always find the best and freshest stuff in the morning markets Karrsie.’ A memory played in the back of his mind, a feminine voice that brought a smile to his face. “I know CC.” He whispered to himself on his walk.
