Personality
Louder than hell
Roland is a wild man, who loves good fight as much as he loves parties, pretty girls, cigars and booze. He is living by the moment and usually doesn´t really much thing about past or future consequences of his own actions, so everything he is doing, he is doing to it´s fullest. He is also very loud person. He can often be seen shouting on his men and other people, either in anger or in joy-full manner and when he is laughing, the whole city knows and he is laughing a lot. He also has very particular taste in music as he prefers hard genres similar to our Power metal and as a good singer he is also reproducing his favorite songs whenever he have the opportunity to do so.
Gentle brute
Despite his bear like appearance, Roland is also rather short tempered. Easy to get angry and prone to unnecessary violence, he is known to pick a fights because of small disputes. Despite that he isn´t cruel and outside of actual battle only rarely goes for actual kill. On the contrary, because he is that type whose anger is pretty short lived he doesn´t have any problems with partying with people he tried to beat to pulp a moment ago. This being said, there are two big NO even for him and that is betrayal and murder of someone close to him. Things like that even he can not forgive and will go out of his way to exact bloody vengeance against anyone who was stupid enough to commit this crimes against him or his men.
Loyall fellow
As implied above, despite his many flaws, Roland has surprisingly strong sense of honor and is very loyal to both his men and his superiors. When he makes debt, he will always settle it and also he isn´t above grand gestures to show off his gratitude. As former captain and current commander, he would never abandon his men, even if it meant death for himself. He is also surprisingly good in following orders, even through he has some problems with authorities and doesn´t like being meaninglessly ordered around.
Obssesed with strength
As someone who was very weak and fragile in the childhood, Roland developed maybe even unhealthy obsession for strength. As he doesn´t want to rely only one power of his Devil Fruit, he started to cultivate his strength with brutal workouts, which are one of the main topic he is boring everyone around him during potential conversations. To prove himself, he also like to challenge the strong looking people around him to contests of strength, such as arm wrestling, lifting heavy stones and other similar feats.
Appearance
Physical Description
Roland is tall man with broad shoulders and big, powerful hands, whose heavy musculature is regularly putting many men around him to the shame, as the circumference of his arms is usually bigger, than the circumference of their thighs. His head is big and somehow brutish in it´s look, probably thanks to its strong bones and big, many times broken nose. Deep in his face are hidden dark brown eyes, glowing with a sparks of madness, that is burning deep inside their owner. This eyes, together with his long black hair and beard, are together making his overall appearance, which his more similar to a wild beast, than man.
Outfit and Accessories
Mainly to show off his heavy musculature, Roland is usually topless, wearing only simple jeans, with strong leather belt, high shoes and finger-less gloves. As his sense for fashion dictates, both his belt and gloves have many metallic studs on them. Aside from this his only other accessories are. metallic rings, in his beard that he is using to made them into one or more braids and the tattoo on his fight arm. As he is fighting with his bare hands, he usually doesn´t wear any weapons near himself.

Thanks to regular and extremely hard physical training, Roland gained not only respectable musculature, but also incredible level of physical strength, that is going far beyond the usual limits of humans and is more comparable to the more powerful races such as Fishmen and Giants.

Roland ate Kuma Kuma no Mi: Model Arctotherium, Zoan-type Devil Fruit, that allows its user to freely transform into full arctotherium form and its hybrid for at will. As a carnivorous Zoan this transformations grants it´s user set of powerful claws and teeth that acts as their natural weapons, together with a huge boost to their physical strength and durability. This boost is even greater given this Fruit´s status as an Ancient Zoan.

Description:– Roland is using his Devil Fruit for so long, that it essentially became his second nature. So it isn´t really surprising, that his main and only fighting style is revolving heavily around his ability to change into gigantic bear and back. Unlike many other Zoan users, he prefers to fight in his full beast form as it grands him greater destructive capabilities and natural armor of thicker fur and dense body fat, only using the hybrid form, if for some reasons he needs to stay on his hind legs longer. As for his fighting tactic it´s very similar to actual bear. Raising on his hind legs and mauling his opponent with powerful strikes from his front legs. This strikes has two major tasks. If the opponent is smaller and weaker than him, they are supposed to strike him down on the ground, where his mobility would be limited, or when the opponent is big and strong, they are supposed to break through his defense, so he would be able to get to their neck with his powerful jaws. Naturally, this style have also elements of wrestling in it, especially various holds and throws, but as he is fighting mainly in his full beast form, his moves are clumsy and so reliant on his power and weight, that they can be hardly considered real techniques.
- Roar (D-class): Putting together his trained breathing skills from all that singing and the much larger and stronger lungs of his transformed forms, Roland learned how to release blasts of compressed air with his roar that can carry a great force over long distance.

Description:- Up on his hind legs, Roland´ll unleash short, yet very fast barrage of a circular strikes with both of his front paws. Each of this strikes is very dangerous by itself, as he is not only hitting his target with the blunt force of his paw, but also pulling that strike back at the moment of contact, slashing it with his powerful claws in the process. Together, they are able to overcome defense of many opponents, strike them down to the ground and leave them there with many serious wounds.

Description:- Whenever he´ll get the opportunity to do so, Roland will grab his opponent for his neck, or other body part, crushing it with his powerful jaws. Than he´ll start violently shake his head from the side to side, beating his opponent with his front legs in the process in an attempt to either break as many bones as possible in his body (if small) or to rip out as big part of his body as possible (if big).

Description:- Down on his all four, Roland will charge at his target with a speed far grater than any normal man can hope to achieve. The goal is to hit the target head on, throwing him down on the ground where he would be easy target for his powerful jaws and claws. Description:- Arctotherium is the largest bear ever existed, with the length of almost 4 meters, height of 1,8 meters and weight around 2 tons making it around triple the sheer size of an average polar bear. Its weight is composed of a healthy mix of muscles and body fat, which acts as its natural armor. Unlike the modern-day bears, Arctotherium has a much shorter face, with the strong jaw and small rounded ears placed on top of it. It has a long, thick fur that dark brown, almost black and very practical for surviving in a cold environment. Having four strong legs with long and powerful claws it usually walks on all four, but like all bears, Arctotherium is also capable of standing on its hind legs and walk a few steps like that.

Description:- In their hybrid form the user of this fruit will turn himself into a large bipedal, bear-like creature with strong claws and powerful teeth. In comparison to the full transformation, the hybrid form of this fruit is smaller and less robust. With a height around 3 meters and the majority of its size composed from pure muscles, rather than a mix of muscles and fat, it clearly trades some of its raw power for speed and maneuverability. It´s claw, despite still being sharp and powerful are also shorter, which allows it to fully use it´s opposable thumbs to grab and hold things and weapons. Also, it´s full body is covered by a thick dark brown fur which is slightly shorter than the fur of its full transformation.

Description: Advanced version of his Hybrid Form, that elongates the claws on the user´s hands, turning them into long, razor shape blades, that are comparable to a swords in a both their durability and sharpness. Otherwise it looks almost completely identical to it´s parent form. The cost for this is the fact that the user is losing his ability to form proper fist or use regular weapons.

Background
Growing up on Cinna Island
Roland was born in South Blue on one of it´s most peaceful islands, Cinna Island to the family of humble fisherman and his wife. As a child, he was small, weak and skinny, complete opposed of his present self. As such he was easy target for bullies and hardly made any real friends in his formative years. His father was too poor to pay for his education, so he ended up with school after few mandatory grades and started working as a fisherman, together with his father. But because of his weak and fragile body, he was more liability than help and so lost his job almost sooner than he got it. To make up for it, his parents send him to sing in local choir to make at least some money with his outstanding voice. He was mocked for this by his peers as castration of young boys was common practice in many choirs in that times. As he didn´t want to become eunuch, he run away and hid himself in nearby woods. As he wandered these woods for few days, hungry and lost, he found out small glade with single tree in the middle of it. That tree was very old and almost dead, yet single piece of fruit was growing on it. Despite not knowing what kind of fruit it was, his hunger was stronger than his caution and so he ate it, despite it disgusting taste and hairy skin.
Massacre of Santa Barbadoss
The fruit Roland ate was no ordinary fruit. It was Devil Fruit, Kuma Kuma no Mi: Model Arctotherium, that gave him the ability to change his body into the form of this ancient bear and back. Thanks to his life in the woods, he quickly learned how to control his power and relied a lot on his new strength, enhanced sense of smell and fur to keep himself safe, well fed and alive. Than after few weeks a thought crossed his mind. With power as this? Why should he even hide in the woods? As a bear he was strong, many times stronger than everyone who ever bullied him. He could go back and live peacefully, or even better, he could go back and take revenge. Full of confidence, he went back to the Santa Barbarossa in his human form and found Cedric and his friends, group of young people few years older than him, who were bulling him the most. What he wanted was to frighten them, maybe hurt a little, but he seriously underestimated his own strength. He killed all six teenagers and became target for all guards and marines in the city. Terrified, he tried to run away, but everywhere he went, there were some people screaming, shooting or swinging their weapons and so he was killing them. Even as twelve years old his beast form was bigger and stronger than regular grizzly bear and so when he finally got through the gate, he left dozens if not hundreds dead bodies behind himself. Running back to the woods, he was hiding himself for a months before he found the courage to go outside.
Pirate in Noth Blue
Months after the Santa Barbadoss incident, Roland left his woods. Tired and broken, he wanted to go home in a hope that local people attributed his attack to some regular bear, but he was mistaken. Someone saw his transformation, someone who survived his rampage and that someone reported him to the authorities. So even before he get anywhere near the city gate, he found his own Wanted posters on all posts along the road. He was criminal with bounty on his head a fugitive, that couldn´t return home. So he fled. As he didn´t wanted to go back to the woods, he was roaming aimlessly across the island, stealing food and hiding from people. It was many months later, when he found a ship moored close to one of the uninhabited bays on the island. Curious, why is a ship so far away from the port, he tried to get closer to them, only to find out that they were in fact crew of pirates. Afraid, he wanted to run, but than he realized, that he is wanted criminal just as them, so he went away from his hiding place and ask them to take him on their ship. When the pirates saw skinny little teenager, they almost died laughing, but all he had to do was show them his Devil Fruit powers and their captain was more than eager to accept him to his crew. From that moment onward, Roland became pirate, who together with his crew mates, was ambushing merchants ships and raiding coastal villages and small towns and despite being simple sailor, he quickly made a name for himself thanks to his special powers. It was than, when he became fascinated (maybe obsessed is a better word) with physical strength and power. Together with his crew mates, he learned how to party, eat a lot and thanks to rigorous training routine, he learned from one of his new friends, ex circus strongman, he grow into the big and powerful man he is now. More than fifteen years was Roland part of this crew, feeling like a big fish in a small pod, because thanks to his Devil Fruit and low ambitions of their captain, he could hardly find anyone, who could present any threat to him. But than, one day their captain died on an illness and the members of his crew voted Roland to be his successor. Captain of his own ship, Roland decided to rename their crew to Grizzly pirates (as he always thought that he is turning into Grizzly) and started preparing themselves for a journey towards Grand Line. Unfortunately, one of their old business partners, who promised them a map betrayed them and so Roland and that part of his crew that survived their fight with the Marines ended up jailed on B – 1.
Member of the Slayers
Chained in seastone handcuffs, Roland didn´t saw an opportunity to escape for him nor his men, until he met Eric Irongate. According to Roland he was young and inexperienced, but they shared their mutual respect for strength and so they quickly became a good friends. So, when Eric managed to escape from his cell, Roland persuaded him to open all the cell so he and his men could also escape. Because of that, their prison break turned into full scale battle against the guards and marines. During this battle he got separated from Eric and led their main forces against the marines in the port. As they lacked proper training and weapons, the battle quickly turned into massacre and only thanks to the power of his claws and teeth they manage to fight their way on two smaller ships. Surrounded by hundreds of marines, they were waiting on their death, until Eric showed up again. Killing their captain, he frightened the marines so much, that they retreated giving them opportunity to finally run away. Deeply moved and inspired by his act, Roland changed his nickname to The Bear (he learned from Eric´s archaeologist, that he isn´t transforming into Grizzly, but as he wasn´t able to pronounce proper name of that animal, he choose this) and declared himself to be commander of Slayer´s 1st division. But as they had some personal things to resolve, he parted ways with his new captain, sailing towards the home island of the men, that betrayed them to the marines back than. As they got to the island, now proudly carrying the flag of Slayer Pirates, they killed everyone in his home village except the men himself, leaving him between the wreckage and bodies of everyone who he ever cared for. From there, they headed to meet with the main crew so they could finally head towards Grand Line.
