Edith #5
“Newt,” Edith recited, committing such an odd nickname to memory. Did he call himself that because he could transform into a lizard? Though the question most definitely stayed at the front of her mind, any sense of acceptance did not. Even as he offered a hand in greeting, she was loath to accept it, instead glowering at him right up until the moment that something nudged her — a gigantic finger. Tia’s voice practically boomed in her ears, though she was unsure as to whether or not that was the colossus’ intent to be so loud.
Giant steps began to move them.“It’s Ede,” she answered with a huff:
“Short for… Edith…”
Conforming to another’s demands wasn’t exactly something that Miss Wieliczka was fond of, but her options were surprisingly limited. For one, she and Newton were suspended some tens of feet above the coast of the Burning Caldera, and the concept of falling such a distance certainly wasn’t too appealing. That, and she was currently in the grasp of a woman who could quite well squash her like a bug if she so desired. Perhaps Miss Dreki wasn’t the best person to act in defiance of.
“Hmph!” Ede grunted, about to follow up with the age old ‘why should I tell you?’ before realising that such a retort probably wouldn’t get her anywhere helpful. Rather, she considered her answer — honesty was perhaps the better option. Besides, this was a point of pride for her, to the point of being rather passionate about it. She glanced at Newton, of whom she was sure she would sooner share a quality, and announced her goal with gusto as she straightened her back and put her hands on her hips: “I’m looking for a Devil Fruit!”—— MEANWHILE, AT DERMIT’S LANDING ——
The gentle groan of timbers and the clicking of boots upon them seemed many times louder than normal, for every sound resonated amongst the hollow caverns. Many hands worked themselves in the heat, temperatures contained only by the shade provided by the rocky structures that were nestled to one side of the deep cove that was Dermit’s Landing. A moderately sized ship floated in the strangely clear waters within the recess, anchored down with its square-rigged sails furled, and perhaps half a dozen rowboats had been steered ashore in a line.“Man, I’m gonna melt,” a man groaned:
“Even in the shade it’s scorching…!”
“Can it! We’ve got a job to do,” a woman replied, smacking the former over the back of the head. “The more you talk about it, the worse it gets,” she added, sifting through the contents of a large storage crate full of straw padding. Sweat on their brows was testament to the heat, but neither seemed all that fatigued by their efforts. They weren’t alone, either, for many another pair of hands served similar purposes, browsing containers and hauling items of interest down from the foot of the cliffside down to the shoreline.
“Pft! It’s all junk so far,” the man coughed, wiping his forehead with a rag and slicking his hair back out of his eyes as he lifted a small, cedar statuette of an elephant out of one of the boxes. “There’s no way we can keep at this,” he stressed, tossing the effigy onto a pile of straw. “The most we’ve found are a handful of old bronze coins that aren’t even worth a Beri, a bunch of poorly carved wooden figurines, and—? Hey, what’s this?”“What’s what?”
“Hey, look at this,” came the reply as the figure rustled through the straw, pulling out a small treasure chest — a box about eighteen inches wide, no more than twelve deep, and twelve again from hinge to lock. “Maybe there’s something good in here,” he said, poking inside with a lockpick. After some fidgeting, the tool snapped, prompting a frown to form upon his face. “This is a pretty tough lock,” the crook commented, receiving an unusual look from his accomplice.
“Bust it open?” she suggested.“What if it’s fragile?”“We should take it to the Captain,” the woman chirped:
“Maybe they’ve found some keys deeper inside?!”
