Greetings: where I live there is this very common superstition, according to which beginning a new endeavor on a tuesday or friday brings misfortune, so yeah, since in my timezone it's still thursday right now, I wanted to hurry and officially begin my new adventure here before midnight comes.
I'm a 29 years old wannabe novelist and part-time videogame designer: I used to love roleplaying via forum, and I first started doing so in 2006, but eventually I had to stop due to a mix of bad experiences (throughout the years I've seen some of the best and most enjoyable communities, but sadly also some of the worst and most toxic) and real life commitments not leaving me enough free time. However, the "real life commitments" part has now been nullified, and will probably stay that way at least for the whole calendar year of 2020, due to a mix of my country being hit quite hard by the COVID-19 pandemic (I'm italian) and my own health conditions already being quite shaky due to a couple issues I've been dealing with for quite a long time.
I therefore now find myself with a lot of free time in my hands, and since the necessity to gather some refernce material for a D&D session has led me to re-reading One Piece, I figured I'd seek out a forum to scratch my roleplaying itch, also because, of the so-called "big three" anime, One Piece is the only one whose setting I've never roleplayed into (for no particular reason, I simply never got the occasion). One google search later here I am.
I wanted to start with a question: do you people think something like this could work? Allow me to explain: as a big fan of ASW, I like to base my characters on their 2D fighting games, such as Blazblue and Guilty Gear (I actually have tournament-level experience with most such games). Venom from GG is one of the few characters I never tried basing a concept on before: as you can see from the linked video, the whole point of his fighting style lies in the fact that most of his moves leave around billiard balls, which he can the move around, knock into one another or into the opponent, and in general use to set up traps and complicated combos. In a word, it's all about individually weak techniques (literally placing a billiard ball on the battlefield) which, when manipulated and strategized with in creative ways, allow for deceptively powerful set-ups.
However, the issue is that in my experience the whole concept of "zoning" (set traps, move ojects from spot to spot, punish the opponent for attempting certain types of approach) doesn't translate well to play-by-post format, so since I read the rules and it seems to me that there's quite a bit of work to do in order to create a character, before committing to a specific idea only to get to the end and find the fighting style simply cannot work I would like to hear to opinion of people who have some experience with this forum's systems. I am not the kind of person who would grow attached to an idea nor whine if something is rejected, so I have zero problems going for something else. I simply would rather spare myself the trouble of writing a full app (and the mods the trouble of reviewing it) for this specific concept if it is at risk of not working within the limitations of a forum.
Welp, I've said my piece: glad to meet you everyone!
