The people of Loguetown cautiously moved around Khali, careful not to get in the way of her massive bulk. Her red skin glistened in the fading sun. She had only just come off of her shift at the docks. After arriving in port, her size made finding a job quite easy. And after nearly ten hours of loading, unloading, and helping to make basic repairs on merchant ships....the giant was ready for a drink.
Alas Khali had to make a simple stop first. She shook her giant fist with frustration, her irritation at the series of small cuts about her fingers and palm burned something terrible. The harbormaster had told her to pick up a large crate, hoping to save time rather than mount it on a pulley. He didn’t know the crate was damaged, and her hand went right through the wood, into a heap of broken glassware. She didn’t get any serious hurt from it. Khali was far to big and tough for such a small thing to cause any real damage.
Khali did her best to ignore the people walking by her and stuck to the middle of the street. Otherwise she would be a bother. And their fear didn’t matter. They were all so small and weak. She had to be better than their fears. That was Khali’s pride, her drive.
“Excuse me miss?”
Came a small voice from somewhere down beside Khali, who stopped, looking around for the source. Eventually she saw a little girl, waving at her with a big smile. Khali stopped, stooping down as low as she could. The child barely came up to the knees of her Kimono. At the moment, her combat leathers were stowed in a pouch hung over her shoulder.
“What is it child?”
Khali asked. Her voice was big and powerful. It carried easily, catching others attention. The girl pointed behind her, at a small church.
“Kite!”
The child was very young, seemingly she didn’t have full use of her words yet. But Khali followed her direction with her eyes. Eventually her gaze fell upon a bright yellow kite wrapped around the church steeple.
”You want me to get it for you?”
Khali asked. Her smile grew, greatly appreciating that someone wished for her help rather than fearing her. The innocence of a child often saw past skin color and size. Brushing back her thick white hair, Khali reached out her hand, motioning the kid to stand in her palm. Excitedly the girl did so, practically clapping and seething with joy.
“Here we go. Hold on!”
Khali curled in her middle finger so that the girl could hold on to it. She then brought the child up, extending her arm steadily until the girl was able to reach the kite string. Laughing the whole time, the girl unfastened her kite, hugging it to her chest as she was brought back to the ground.
”A small kindness....but one that she will remember for the rest of her life.”
As Khali gave the girl a playful rub on the head with her finger, a mans voice came from nearby. The girl ran off laughing and giggling, and a priest approached from the church. He was bald, with a massive mustache, which was distorted by his smile. Khali regarded him plainly, not overly liking the idea of church or priests. But he was friendly. She wouldn’t treat him ill.
“You could have continued on your way. And yet you stop to help a child with her toy?”
He seemed curious, apparently unphased by her appearance or size.
”I help anyone who deserves it.”
Khali said with a grunt, standing to her full height.
“I don’t like seeing people frown.”
The priest seemed pleased by her response. Not that it mattered to Khali. The only person in the blues she needed to please was herself.
”Then you have my thanks. And my respect. Few place the happiness of others in high value.”
He seemed nice enough. Khali nodded, not really having anything to say to the priest.
“I’ll not hold you longer. Go with peace young woman.”
And Khali left, heading further into the city, aiming to reach a clinic which was rumored to do simple procedures for cheap.
