Personality
A quiet and unassuming young man at first glance, Konaa does not give off the air of someone approachable. His expression tends toward the staunchly indifferent, with more than a hint of irritation boiling under the surface. In all conversation, casual or otherwise, he's blunt, dismissive, and jocular. He has little to no social tact whatsoever, and whatever he thinks is usually what he says. All of his thoughts are presented candidly, with no effort made to spare the other person's feelings.
Hostility and deflection are his primary means of interacting with others. In addition, he rarely gives situations or people the weight they deserve, frequently lapsing into sarcastic and demeaning comments at the drop of a hat. His sense of humor is very active and all-encompassing, and tends toward the bitter and frustrated. He's considerably high-strung and easily annoyed, hypocritically, in spite of his own rather off-putting nature.
This lack of seriousness applies to his motivation as well - Konaa is a poor soldier in almost every sense of the word, being capricious and willing to toe the line toward unacceptable laxness on a regular basis, not to mention more than a little cowardly and adverse to danger. He has little to no faith in the concept of Justice, or in the inherent righteousness of the Marines' cause. Nor does he believe orders should be followed simply because they're given. It's a very inherent and intrinsic contradiction that makes him such a lackluster Marine. In spite of this, he's no criminal. Konaa has enough basic respect for the rule of law that he wouldn't break it simply to give himself an easier time of things.
While in combat, his outward demeanor usually gives way to panic very quickly. He's terrified of injury or death and lets that cowardice drive and motivate him to act more than anything else. In spite of this, his panic usually doesn't sink too deeply into his mind - he has a talent for keeping his mind moving and thinking even in dangerous and tense situations. That said, if given the option, he will run away in an instant rather than stand and fight.
Despite many flaws, there are more subtle aspects to Konaa's personality that have emerged over time. While he's harsh and often unfair in tone and words, he only speaks up defensively, rather than bullying others. If someone seems legitimately hurt by something he's said, he is shockingly fast to feel remorse, if not to make amends. All in all, much of his unpleasantness comes from a poor grasp on the consequences of his actions rather than any sort of outright malice.
Furthermore, his prickly demeanor easily shatters under certain circumstances. An act of kindness, whether it be large or small, is usually enough to provoke bewilderment, uncertainty, and gratitude in him. Wholeheartedness reaches and affects him profoundly, and usually leaves him without a hint of what to do. In many ways, he's a teenager, with all of the emotional instability that entails. Konaa has little comprehension of his own feelings and very stunted emotional maturity.
Most rarely seen of all is his genuine sense of morality. He feels obligated to intervene - against all his instincts - should injustice occur before him, regardless of the perpetrator. Above all, he is completely disgusted by wanton cruelty. In that regard, he has more of a Marine's spirit than even he knows.
Appearance
With unkempt brown hair, somewhat below average height, and a lean unremarkable build, Konaa is rather unassuming in general. Part of this is exasperated by his posture - he almost always slouches and skulks when he moves or leans against a wall or door, lowering his presence significantly. The first impression one might get should they take a closer look is that of someone with absolutely no interest in impressing others with his appearance. It isn't simply his hair, or his often unpressed, ruffled uniform, frequently missing its tie. As a whole, he has a sloppy, ragged demeanor all about him.
His face is rounded and youthful, with large, dark green eyes - though, given how often he squints, it can be difficult to notice their size. His hair is neck-length all around, and nothing short of a disaster in every sense of the word, a desolate place that no comb or conditioner dare enter.
As of late, his arms and legs have a fair amount of muscle on them, though his build tends to ensure they're rather well hidden underneath his clothes.

Fighting Styles
Name: THIS WAS A BAD IDEA
Focus: Pragmatism, deception, using the environment.
Rank: E
Description: Not so much a fighting style as the panicked actions Konaa takes when he's found a fight he can't weasel his way out of. He's not one to trade blows with an opponent face to face - Having a realistic view of his own limitations, he'll shamelessly use whatever dirty trick or unfair advantage he can find to come out ahead. If he throws a punch, they've probably got their back turned. If he stands his ground, it's likely to lure them into a trap. If he's blustering and bragging, there's almost certainly someone sneaking up behind them. A born cheater and unashamed of it.
Background
Born to a pair of citizens of Loguetown, Konaa's very existence put a strain on the couple's finances and marriage. They were both Marines, but neither were particularly highly ranked, his mother being an Ensign. They were known to take bribes from pirates passing through the town and even sold confiscated weapons on the black market. The two of them had a rather poor reputation, but were essentially too small time for anyone important to take notice.
Until a pirate ship with a stolen Devil Fruit was captured at Loguetown. Konaa's parents realized this was their chance to make a fortune, and took off with it when they had the chance. However, they underestimated how easily their commanding officer could find them – their attempted fencing of the fruit was walked in on, and the two of them ultimately left the fruit and fled the town – without their son.
Abandoned, Konaa spent his early years in the town's orphanage. His parents' theft of the Devil Fruit had been a front page headline, so whenever the curious child wandered out onto the streets, people who recognized him kept their distance. No one was overly cruel to him, but neither were they making him feel welcome in their community. Hurt at first, Konaa eventually learned to stop trying to talk to people, and that's a lesson he took to heart. He grew distant from others, developing a sardonic wit and never learning proper social skills.
Having alienated most of the people he grew up with in the orphanage, he would leave it at age 16. He realized soon that without any real talent, he was unlikely to survive and make a living. His only real option appeared to be enlisting in the Marines – and so they gained their least motivated recruit in recent memory.
