Unlike his two warrior women companions, Jerek was not busy handling a tough foe. Instead, as the big names rushed at his allies, he rushed out to divert attention by removing the other members of the battalion, and to stall Ahab. I feel like these marines have zero idea of military strategy. If they were truly smart, they would have went for me, the weak link, first, removed me, then double-teamed Shimmer, and then brought down Amber, who is clearly the strongest member. I can't believe I'm the weakest, even when I have a devil fruit. Oh well, here they come! As the wind rushed past his face, and he dashed at the marines, he began focusing his full attention into the battle. These recruits may not have been a menace, but they were using far-ranged weapons, and, if he did not play this smart, they would definitely hit him. He was no bullet speed runner, so, the second the marines focused their attention back on him, he would have to seek cover.
Unfortunately, it did not take the marine recruits long to focus him down. As he dove out of range of their first blast of rifle-fire, he threw a vial of chemicals onto the deck, causing eerie green and purple smoke to fill the air. Although he could release steam with his devil fruit, he was still a new user, having only ate the day they boarded the ferry at Loguetown, so it was unreliable and time-consuming, at best. At worst, they force of the steam would propel him into the ocean, and that was not a risk he was willing to take just to bring down a few measly recruits. Come on, Jerek! You have two months of pirating under your belt! This should be a piece of cake, even if that was ten years ago. However, these marines were determined, and continued firing through the smoke. Jerek, however, knew a smarter plan.
As the marines shouted and blasted, with the loud, booming voice of Ahab urging them on, Jerek decided to use a little fear tactic to toy with their sense of hearing. Projecting his own voice in a menacing slither-like tone, he began taunting, "You know, I have no idea what I just threw, only that it makes smoke. For all you know, you might be dying, slowly. Maybe it's from the mushrooms I threw in there, or the quills of the puffer fish. Wow, now that I think about it, it could easily be poison." Jerek, engrossed in his little act, began pacing around the cloud of smoke, edging behind the marines. "Or maybe it could be from some of the gases, which might be acidic, chipping away at your lungs, burning you. And do you know what's the best part? While you are busy, perhaps, dying, in there, I know exactly what to do." Jerek added a little emphasis there, and, he could already here the marine recruits and whatever security guards were left screaming in there, with Ahab yelling at them at the top of his lungs to quiet down. Jerek did not bother trying to talk. Instead, he kept walking, now almost behind them.
"You see, you foolish marines, I made that gas cloud with my little concoction, so I should know where the cloud would end. I could be behind you right now." He winced as he saw the marines already beginning to fire behind themselves. "See, here's the funny thing about you guys. If you had a sliver of intelligence, we pirates would not exist. We would have long been exterminated." As he spoke, he heard two consecutive crashes behind him, and his friends looming over a hole. "Ooh, and looks like my friends just outwitted their assailants. But, anyway, since we are smarter, we are braver, and we don't need any protocol or imposed morals to guide us, we are about to defeat you. And we will always defeat you." At this point, he could hear high levels of commotion inside the cloud, and he could notice it beginning to fade. He could tell they were furious, and, while some would say it was a waste of the cloud to use to rile them up, instead of attacking, it would be better in the long run.
As the cloud ended, Jerek was already prepared, and hurled bundle after bundle of vials. I'll be out of vials at this rate. I hope Karate Island has some. With a furious roar, however, Ahab charged out him, coming at inhuman speeds, proving his status as a captain. Jerek knew he could not leap out of the way by normal means, but he did have a devil fruit. As he launched himself over the captain with a blast of steam, he tumbled and rolled into some of the security guards, lining himself up perfectly to eliminate the other recruits. He haphazardly launches a weak blast of steam at Ahab, in order to temporarily blind him, and went at the recruits. Using the other aspect of his power, Jerek grabbed one recruit by the throat, and began burning the recruit, who began screaming at the top of his lungs. Jerek did not have the strength to strangle the man with one hand, but could sure burn through the man's larynx, given time. He did not share Shimmer's concern of the enemy, and would have gladly killed the man, but he knew he did not want to lose Shimmer as an ally. As the other marines came at him, Jerek went into a rather gentle-manly battle frenzy.
As one recruit quickly aimed his rifle, Jerek landed a kick to the man's crotch, keeping his foot there to leave a nasty burn. As two security men rushed at him, Jerek unleashed his blade, barely managing to hold off a strike from one, and swinging around the leg of the one who he was burning to dodge the other strike, causing the two to loose their momentum. Jerek used the chance to leap off the man who he was burning, and, with a great kick, launched the man into the mast, while hurling onto the other two, who he promptly disabled with light slashes to the abdomen. He held one up as a support, and, sleepily, began swinging at the other two remaining recruits, and the three remaining security guards. He flung his blade, impaling one in the face, and shocking another, who he ran up to and did a throat-burning to. With one security guard remaining, Jerek ducked the slice of the man's blade, and, before the man could follow up with another strike, a fist sliced through the man's stomach and flew at Jerek head, which was now perfectly aligned with the punch. Jerek barely managed to scoot out of the way, and Ahab withdrew his fist and lunged at Jerek, who scrambled off in time. Jerek was exhausted, Ahab was pissed, and the real battle had only begun.
