The old promotion system can be found here.
Promotion is a big part of any military force, and the Marines are no exception! Every Marine is entitled to climb the ranking ladder, whether they are but a soldier, or a commissioned officer.
On Bon Voyage, Marines are entitled to ranks based on their Class, and members are not restricted to requiring staff approval for climbing the ranking ladder early on. Your character's rank in the Marines is purely associated with their successes in character and, as you see fit - and abiding by the standard restrictions - you may see them promoted (or even demoted) to a higher rank. It is your choice and should make for a better story; rank has little to no influence on what a character is entitled to.
You do not need to apply for promotions early on, as you can make them an in character occurrence. See the details below about when you will need to start applying for them!
See this thread for details on the various ranks of the Marines.
In order for Soldiers to continue to rise and for Officers to achieve ranks higher than that of Lieutenant Commander, members will require staff approval for their character. This is how it works:
SOLDIERS & HONORS
The highest available rank to soldiers is Master Chief Petty Officer (MCPO), attainable freely once the character has reached the minimum Experience benchmark of 500 - better known as C Class. As there are no higher ranks without becoming an officer, we have included an Honors System to allow members who want their characters to remain soldiers to have their character earn recognition beyond rank alone.
Honors are the equivalent of special medals awarded to soldiers for acts of valor, leadership and going above and beyond the call of duty. A single character can earn up to 5 Honors in total, but may only earn one at a time unless circumstances state otherwise.
To gain an Honor, the member must have had their character participate in something such as a large scale battle against powerful piratical forces, or equivalently exuberant displays of courage and ability. This only counts if done as part of a plot thread or log - missions and events do not count towards eligibility for Honors.
Once you have completed the thread and received your grade (a score of 3 or higher is required for the thread to count (or a score of 75+ for logs)), you can use it to apply for Honors in this board. Simply create a new thread entitled "<Member Name> Promotion Requests" and submit the following template with all details filled in:Character Name/Link:
Marine Division:
Current Rank:
Graded Threads:
The thread you make will then be used for all of your promotion and Honors requests for all of your Marines. This is to keep all of your information together and to help prevent clutter! Please note that you may only use a thread once in order to obtain Honors for a character, though you may use as many individual threads as you like to apply for them.
OFFICERS & PROMOTIONS
The highest available rank which an officer can freely obtain is that of Lieutenant Commander, at the minimum Experience benchmark of 500 - C Class. Just as with the Honors system, officers must prove themselves worthy of rising through the ranks of the Marines by serving in large scale battles against pirates or Revolutionaries, or doing similarly grand things to enforce the law and uphold Justice.
Please remember that only plot threads that score a 3 or above, or logs that score 75 or above, are eligible for use in obtaining promotion.
To obtain further promotion, the same system applies as with Honors. Once you have completed a thread in which your character does something worthy of recognition, await the grading results and then fill in the template below as necessary:Character Name/Link:
Marine Division:
Current Rank:
Graded Threads:
If you haven't already, please make sure to post the completed template in a thread entitled "<Member Name> Promotion Requests", under this board. All of your future requests for Honors and promotions, regardless of character, should be done through this thread.-~-
Q's & A's
-~-
Q. Does my character have to remain a soldier?A. Nope!
If, at some point during their story, you decide that you want your character to attain the rank of a commissioned officer, then you're more than entitled to do so. Just make sure to stick to the Class/Exp guidelines when doing so! We don't want some E Class Seaman suddenly becoming a Lieutenant out of nowhere. Any promotion your character undergoes should make sense in character - a soldier becoming an officer for no notable reason just doesn't make a good, sound story!
Q. Can I have my character be demoted?A. Yes, you can!
As long as you stick to the guidelines, we really don't mind what happens to your character regarding their rank in the Marines. If your character has done something dishonorable, then it makes sense that they would be demoted, and writing that scenario could make for a great story! Even if you've earned Honors or been promoted to Commander or above, you can still do this without worry. Once evidence of your approval has been documented, that rank/Honor is what your character is entitled to. You can even have your character demoted from officer to soldier!
Q. When can I apply for Honors/promotions?A. 1,000 Experience.
It may seem like quite a hefty benchmark to reach first (and we might change it in future if it's deemed too much of a stretch), but the current minimum requirement for being able to obtain Honors or reach higher promotions is 1,000 Experience. One of the chief reasons for this is so that characters have a period of time with which to achieve some of the requirements. This means you can go above and beyond the call of duty before hitting the benchmark, and then have some things to fall back on if you want to grab those Honors or attain that big promotion!
Q. Why are their only 5 Honors?A. To keep soldiers and officers 'equal'.
Because this system separates soldiers and officers, we thought it right to have some sort of correlation between the two. In the earlier Classes, soldiers and officers have equivalent ranks - i.e. a Petty Officer can match an Ensign in terms of Class and Experience - and because there are five ranks beyond Lieutenant Commander, we settled on five Honors to keep the link. This way, should it come to it, you can effectively 'trade-in' your Honors to jump to the equivalent rank of officer:
1 Honor Commander 2 Honors Captain 3 Honors Commodore 4 Honors Rear Admiral 5 Honors Vice Admiral
Q. Do ranks/Honors affect when my character can gain Haki?A. Not at all!
In fact, the opposite is true. Characters are entitled to manifest Haki as per our usual rules on Haki, regardless of what position they are in within the World Navy. However, it is not possible to gain the rank of Vice Admiral until your character has manifested and learned to control their Haki. A proficiency in this ability is required, as the series has stated that all Vice Admirals are capable of using this unusual power. Similarly, one of the chief ways to obtain an Honor is for a soldier to have displayed their proficiency in the ability.
