When her food arrived, Merche reached into her pocket and pulled out a few coins, which she carefully counted out before paying. Once she did so, she ate voraciously, delighting in every bite, and as such not paying as much attention to the actual task of planning until she was done. Whether it was arrogance or something else, she seemed to be confident that the group would be successful in their goal.
Knowing how much even the best laid plots could go wrong in an instant, Merche didn't make an attempt to think too far ahead outside of generalities, but she already could see how the operation would best work. Kalendra was adept at any number of physical things, and clearly was no stranger to working a boat, so the bulk of the actual taking of the ship would likely fall on her. As for Leonardo, he seemed to be the best candidate for acting as the group's muscle, though Merche hoped they wouldn't need to resort to too much actual combat. As for herself, she intended to continue using her mind first and foremost in the taking of the ship, and seemed to be sure that, if she could just get a hold on the boat's steering mechanism, she could direct it well out to sea. And although she didn't say anything out loud, she was also counting on Gale to be of use, holding off on speaking any particular instructions for the time being, for reasons that would be already clear to herself and the bird.
As the boat drifted along the canal, Merche quietly relaxed in the shade, legs kicked up and leaning far back. She did not say much as they drifted along, seeming to prefer the sounds of the water and town to any conversation, but she responded to any words directed at her politely enough.
When Kalendra brought up her concern about being able to find the next island, Merche smirked a little to herself, as she always did when her area of expertise, that of navigation, was mentioned. "Naturally," she said. "Once we have ourselves a ship, I'll get us on course for a safe island before you know it. With my skills, the pirates won't be able to find us, even if they get a whole dang fleet to chase us. Well, how easy that'll be will depend on the ship. But, no matter what, I can handle it, so just count on me."
As Leonardo attempted to play with Gale, she watched with some amusement, taking delight in seeing him be treated like an actual toucan. Overall, she displayed every intention to keep on letting the others row the boat forward, being too comfortable to do anything else. In spite of her natural calmness, however, she seemed to always keep an eye outwards, scanning the horizon as if looking out for something, particularly so the farther out they went. When Leonardo asked about what she did for fun, however, she suddenly sat up, and, for lack of a distraction, began nervously tapping her thumbs together. She was unused to being asked about herself, and didn't know how to respond. What did most people say, if posed such a question? Moreover, why would he be interested in something like that?
"Uh, for fun... I'm learning to play the pan flute. Er, I mean, I only know a couple of simple songs so far, but, well, it's something to do in the slow moments, I guess."
As the sky grew dimmer, Merche started to look noticeably restless, tapping her foot unknowingly. She knew it would be better to approach their target at night, but still she was hoping to get a good look at it before then.
