Well… the water had worked nicely and all, but somehow Itty could see the flaws in it. For one, Itty had been lucky that the Marines hadn’t heard the splash it made when it had emptied out the bucket, for another, caring around a bucket of water or having one prepared somewhere all the time, was not very efficient. And yet, having something that made people slip was very useful. Maybe there was something that was easier to carry around and could work as an alternative? Marbles perhaps? That sounded like a good idea, but where to get them from?
Like a lot of other things that Laco considered to be a good addition to the ship’s defense, those weren’t easy to get. Not when you couldn’t leave the ship and go shopping.
“I’ll write a list with the things I need and put it where Louisa will find it. If I sign with Queeny’s name she’s likely to get the things without asking questions too much.”
That was decided then. At the first opportunity Itty would have to learn how to write!
But their enemies were top priority for now. Persistent as they were in staying, it was like having bugs crawling over your skin. At least that was how La Colmena felt about the Marines on her deck. Bugs they were, yeah, but not the cool and lovable ones Itty loved to catch when they came close enough to the ship to do so, but the nasty sort, the ones that made you go yuck! Like spiders.
With a last glance at Melosa and Louisa, both women were standing upright and with pride, not budging an inch against the cowardly aggressors who confronted them, the Klabautermann went below deck. It was dark inside the ship but Itty knew its way around here. Darkness posed no problem, in fact it was rather comfortable. Up on deck there wasn’t nearly close to enough places to hide, but down here it could stay out of sight without problem. But it would also be unable to help. Curse upon those superstition that said the ship was doomed if the Klabautermann was to show itself! How could anyone work like that?! Things really had to change. Itty needed a good idea at once!
Without any goal or direction Laco combed through the ship. It wasn’t really necessary to walk through the rooms to know what was inside, but knowing the content and getting an inspiring idea was different.
The little imp was about to turn around and leave another room when its eyes felt on a certain object. It was a bag with different pipes attached to it. Louisa had used it to make music. Sometimes it had sounded interesting, but sometimes it had sounded outright frightening. Just what La Colmena needed!
With the strange music instrument tucked under the arm the Klabautermann hurried back up to the deck and confronted the first problem. Which one of those pipes was one supposed to blow into? How could one know when there where so many of them?!
It knew that the finger had to cover the little holes, so that one was obvious at the very least. On a closer look, there was also just one pipe with a small enough opening to put your mouth around. Those two things figured out, La Colmena took a deep breath and blew into the pipe at full strength!
Nothing happened, the bagpipe didn’t utter a single sound. Cursed thing! Was it trying to sabotage Itty’s attempt of help? Aside from moving it around a few times, the Klabautermann had hardly done anything to draw the anger of the bagpipe! So why?!
Itty tried again, puffed out cheeks it gave all it had, but with the same result. Just how did Louisa make it work?
Looking over to Louisa didn’t help with playing this uncooperative instrument and Itty gave it up. The musician and Melosa seemed to have split up, probably as a tactic to fight the Marines. With a sudden feeling of guilt for having taken her personal belonging without asking, the Klabautermann set the bagpipe down, carefully leaving it next to the railing. It would be bad if Louisa caught it with the instrument or if Louisa caught even a sight of Itty.
This time there was just nothing more that La Colmena could do, but next time! Next time it would be different the ship vowed.
“You’re in for it now.” The Klabautermann told to the Marines. “Louisa is gonna hand your ugly butt back to you and Melosa will teach your Captain a lesson on who is best!”
