Finally after a long and mostly uneventful and maybe even boring voyage he had arrived at his long desired destination. Strictly speaking said destination only got to the top of his to-visit-list two islands ago when some middle-aged woman had told him about the wonderful gardens of the Ciudadela Queendom and piqued his interest with her flowery description of the wonders of said paradise gardens. While he attributed most of the tale to her vivid imagination and took it with a pinch of salt and probably a lot of pepper as well, he still hoped that the foundation, the solid earthy core of the story, was true. While being much of a dreamer at times Dan still liked to have a sound footing to act on, after all he wasn’t a little kid anymore but a grown up man that had just recently celebrated his twenty-seventh birthday. Or was he already twenty-eight? He really needed to get used to his new age or it would be embarrassing if he told others a wrong one. Not like that was likely to interest anyone nor would it sound strange for he looked younger than his age, or maybe that was his vanity speaking out of him.
Like always Dan had chosen to travel by accompanying a merchant vessel and doing all sorts of odd jobs while on it to earn his stay. The aspirating bounty hunter had yet to catch his first bounty but he was in no hurry. There were other goals too that he was pursuing and none of them could be rushed. Ciudadela Queendom was important for him for two reasons. First was his interest in herbal medicine. If he was lucky then one of the many gardens of the island would contain an useful plant he would be able to use to improve his medicine with. The other one was because he had heard that the farmers of this island who were practically well-trained botanists had developed some kinds of “combat-usable” fruits or seeds and Dan’s combat powers could need a little backing and maybe those fruits were just what he needed to finally start his career as a bounty hunter.
The long blue-black ponytail that went along his back down to his hips whipped from side to side as he walked down the dock. Two kids ran passed him, not without jumping in one of the little puddles that was left from the rain earlier today, and Dan’s black hakama, a sort of traditional trousers from his mother’s place, got soaked wet by the splashing water.
“Hey! Be more careful!” he called after them. One of them, the older one judging from his high, turned around and looked at him as if he had only noticed him now, which was disappointing for Dan’s kimono was bright red and should have been very visible. It rarely helped, somehow he had something unobtrusive about himself that made him vanish in the eyes of the crowd.
“And change your clothes you’ll catch a cold!” he added and even got a friendly wave back from both of them even though he had just scolded them. Maybe they were sorry for being careless.
“Ok, Miss!” They ran off and Dan watched them with his yellow-brown eyes until they disappeared.
It was probably the long hair and his high (5’3”) didn’t help much either. All in all Dan wasn’t really a very masculine man and confusions like that often happened when people just ran past him rather than to give him a careful look. That was not the best welcome to receive but he was used to it mostly. It still hurt a bit though.
Dan shook his head, sighed and then straightened himself and went to get a good look at the city he was in.
