In the welcome comfort of the geyser’s warmth the three Marines stood, discussing their next step. While Goldman suggested a retreat, or an ambush preceded by a scouting mission, Kaiser wished to take the heroic approach by taking the fight to the defectors. All of the suggestions held merit, but laying a plan without knowing the capabilities of the enemies was a difficult task. Immersed in his thoughts, Joseph squatted and closed his eyes. On one hand, the defectors would have to return from the vault eventually, so one possibility was to lay a trap in the Reception Hall itself. But knowing exactly how much time it would take for the defectors to find what they sought in the vault was impossible. In worst case, the trio would be stuck in the gloomy and claustrophobic hallways of the ruined base for several days. On the other hand, it would be more risky to advance forward and ambush the rogue Marines somewhere along the path to the vault. But with Goldman’s outlandish skills, the risks were reduced considerably. Both options were shadowed by the obstacle that was Ensign Dawdry. As Joseph’s combat skills were lacking, and his comrades were recruits, the obstacle seemed insurmountable. Furthermore, the only information he had gotten from the broken recruit was that the Ensign was brutal and utilized a katana in combat.
Joseph clenched his teeth and stood up to face his comrades once again. “The walk down to the vault will take us an hour. I suggest that we continue with the 20 meter distance routine until we are closer to the vault. At that point, Mr. Goldman can scout ahead. If we encounter the group on route, the 20 meters should be enough to turn back and prepare an am,-“ Before he could finish his sentence, his ears picked up something. Joseph turned his head towards the corridor leading to the left. Footsteps. Soft footsteps, and yet, they clearly were footsteps. Joseph raised his right index finger in front of his lips to signal silence. Reacting to the footsteps, Joseph swiftly dived behind a boulder of rock that had fallen near the reception desk. He hoped that his comrades would find a place to hide as well. The footsteps came from only one person. Another scout?
