“So…” the director said quite sternly, his shadowed brow casting down on the two young woman kneeling before him while he leaned against the desk. They had sat in tension long enough and truthfully speaking his butt was hurting from the wooden ridge of the furniture behind him, “First, the objective: Is she worthy of being my secretary? Or do I really need to take you two from your people?” he asked somewhat tiredly.
Few knew of the situation with the two attendants and the director, but it was well known that the man was pleased with the skills of both ‘Fae’ and ‘Mae’ and regarded them highly as one of the finest specimens of the ninja he’d seen—a fact which the pair seemed to have taken to heart. While they were never quite so overt with their mannerisms, they’d grown fond of him it seemed for often they’d preen without so much as a warning; far exceeding their station as glorified bodyguards and liaisons. Naturally being a man of sense, the leader of the new CP9 hardly batted an eye at such behavior, but now was different. They had known what he believed of Natai and his intentions in bringing her into his tent that night—they had known and they did not like the idea of someone else replacing them as his ‘reliable’ pieces. Silence told him volumes and their drooping shoulders were even more unfamiliar than the flares of emotion he’d seen on those even more alien faces that stared at the ground.
All the months he’d toiled to create the new recruits list and he’d never known their faces. They’d done so much for him and he’d never known they were so beautiful; his heart stirred with sympathy for them. It must have been hard to know that the master they’d forsaken their people’s customs to follow had already been seeking someone whom he could possess more fully than he could them. They knew the costs though. Never attach yourselves to anyone when you’re chasing a dream—or else you’ll kill them along with yourself and then you have nothing. This thought did not allow the swallowing that came after to go down easily as he simply muttered in response to their unresponsiveness, “Fine. I understand.” , before walking past them, but not before kissing the tops of their heads somberly and striding out of the door; a gesture of kindness for the wounds that had been inflicted upon their hearts. He couldn’t be sure, but as the flaps rippled on last time in the wind after he’d exited in the tent he was certain that he’s heard a few quivering whimpers escape from his abode.
Heart hardened more than he could have expected the director carried on to where Natai was being treated by the doctors of the ninja. While painkiller came in the forms of pills in the mainland, these people rubbed salve from the surrounding vegetation into the muscles to accelerate the palettes of the skin and reduce the nerves’ activity in that region. As it where, they had stripped Natai down to bare nakedness when he’d walked in—courtesy of his order to ‘search her for any poisons that might have been injected into her’. Starting slightly at viewing her at such a time, a small smile played on his lips, one which he stifled as the doctors glanced his way and he entered the room. Finding a spot next to a bookshelf he stared at the men work in silence, thinking about the weighty conversation he’d already had with ‘Fae’ and ‘Mae’.
“All of you. Get out.” he said after some time. The doctors looked curiously at him, but he didn’t have time for questioning slights to his authority; burn them all in hell for waiting even a breadth of a second after he had ordered them gone, “NOW YOU IDIOTS!” he snapped slamming his fist into the bookcase he leaned upon. His heart rate risen as the men scattered soundlessly.
“What do you think you’re here for, Miss Praxai?” came the question. Words as edged as a dagger’s blade and hissed in such a way a snake might even have shied away from its origin, but now the woman had nowhere to run as the director pinned her down with his eyes, “Tell me what are your ambitions really? Do you have any? Do you understand the position I’m in? Do you even care?” he rambled, torn between hate and something else, but he did not wish to visit that now. Only rage funneled through his core, hot and red, filling him warmly from head to toe.
It felt dirty and good all at the same time. For the first time since he’d attained his first memory, he was close to striking a woman.
