Devil Fruits cover a wide variety of different supernatural abilities. However, there are some types of “Superpower” that either aren’t suitable for the One Piece Universe, or just don’t properly fit with what’s been established as “normal” for a Devil Fruit. Here’s a listing of all the general powers that are considered inappropriate and are thus unavailable for use in Devil Fruit creation, sometimes for the sake of maintaining site balance.
Psychic Powers
Devil Fruits influence the body, not the mind. They cannot grant an Ability User psychic powers such as mind-reading, telekinesis, precognitive abilities, or any other effect relying solely upon mental powers. On top of this, some of these powers are covered by canon Devil Fruits, anyway.
Cloning
Devil Fruit users cannot create “perfect” copies of themselves or others, as this would be deemed too powerful and ripe for abuse. Imperfect copies may be plausible solution, but should not necessarily be the primary ability of a Devil Fruit.
Time Manipulation
Whether it’s travelling through it, or otherwise bending it, it’s banned. Time abilities aren’t suitable and have been partly covered via a canon Devil Fruit that, in itself, had major limitations.
Wind Logia
To clarify here, Wind isn’t a natural substance. It’s kinetic energy transmitted via gases. As gas is covered by Caesar’s Devil Fruit and kinetic energy would be far too powerful and inappropriate for the site.
Antimatter
This one’s just straight up too powerful to be allowed here. The ability to destroy anything material is way above and beyond what even some of the most powerful Devil Fruits have been shown to be capable of, regardless of type.
Water & Kairōseki (“Seastone”)
As water is the natural weakness of Devil Fruit users, any form of control over it is not viable, and Seastone has the same problem.
Zoan-like Paramecia & Logia
If you’re transforming directly into an animal, it’s a Zoan. Certain Paramecia may allow for odd “bestial” effects, but they don’t allow for true transformation. No transforming into insect swarms, either!
Non-Animal Zoans
If it’s a plant, a type of fungus, an inanimate object, or something similar, it doesn’t work as a Zoan. Only Mythical Zoans can work around this one, and even then the mythos must liken it to an animal or beast in some way, shape or form.
Aura, Ki, Etc.
Life’s essence and spiritual abilities don’t really work as Devil Fruits for the sake of site balance. The closest comparison in One Piece is Haki, which is a separate feature.
Radiation
Like Antimatter, this one’s restricted due to it being quite difficult to work with.
Organic Logia
Logia are based on naturally occurring, inorganic substances and energy forms. Anything from an animal, or anything that requires some form of immediate animal process to make, does not make for a viable Logia. Certain man-made substances and other unusual things can be made in the form of “Special” Paramecia, however.
Aquatic Zoan
If it only breathes underwater or is otherwise wholly dependent on being submerged for survival and mobility, it doesn’t work as a Zoan!
Deity-Adjacent Mythical Zoan
Due to their more unusual powers, Mythical Zoans get some leeway in what they can be, but they are still limited. Gods and god-like characters (e.g. Thor, Susanoo, or Fenrir) are not suitable options, alongside named individuals of a specific type of mythical beast (e.g. Fafnir). However, mythical beasts that are unique entities are viable options in most cases. Generally, if it’s a character, it’s a no; if it’s a creature, it’s a yes.
“Meta” Powers
Influencing another character’s Devil Fruit doesn’t work as a power here on site. Cancellation, empowering, weakening and similar effects are only viable as the result of two Devil Fruit abilities contradicting one another.
Paramecia & Logia “Models”
Only Zoans have “Models”. You can’t have an alternate species of fire. And you can’t be made of a different type of rubber.
One Piece-Exclusive/Fictional Animal Zoans
Zoans must be based on a type of animal known in the real world, or (in the case of Mythical Zoans) a creature from a real world mythos.
