The deeper decks of the Zeigler were nothing short of labyrinthine; an immense network of gangways and halls formed a maze more confusing than any sprawling city, forcing one Sheridan Reese to think hard at every turn. The last thing he wanted to do was end up being cornered by a bunch of pirates in the bowels of the ship – ideally he would have liked to avoid being cornered by any sort of criminal, regardless of his environment. The issue here was that it was easier said than done. Having segregated himself quite heavily from the assailing above, the fashionable fellow had lost all bearings.
“I must be in the cargo bay, right…?” Posing his query to no-one in particular, Sherry advanced further. The timbers of the great galleon creaked and groaned as the gentle tides pushed against its enormous hull, causing the world to tilt and lean ever so slightly left and right. Somewhere above, his ears picked up the sounds of footsteps marching through the halls. It was an irregular beat, difficult to discern, but there was absolutely no way for him to see who it was. It could have been fellows civilians, the ship’s crew, Marines, or – in the worst case scenario – the pirates.
Panicking to an extreme which probably was not called for, the cowardly clothier crumpled himself into a corner. The smaller he made himself, the less likely it was that he would be spotted, so the theory went. Perhaps it was a little counterintuitive? Regardless, he had been forced to face reality.“Quickly, to your stations!” announced another voice:
“We can’t let them get a hold of it!”
What’s ‘it’…? What are they talking about…? As what sounded like a dozen footsteps trampled past him, Master Reese’s cocoa eyes could not help but widen in some degree of gratitude. Six men dressed in sailing uniforms, none of whom appeared to be particularly well armed, scrambled in single file towards the opposite end of the vessel’s cargo hold. From what he could see, they appeared to be little more than some of the Zeigler’s crewmen, but something told him that they might have been something greater.“I knew it was a bad idea to transport it via civilian ship!”“Yeah, but whatever the top dogs say goes…”
Ugh! Do I follow them? They seem nice enough… Placing his fair façade between his hands almost as if to blot out the distant and dimmed noises of battle, the trembling tailor fought an unusual war within his own conscience; what was the better decision? On one hand, he could remain hidden until everything blew over, and confide in the Marines as he had always been told to do. On the other, he needed to act out of his own accord – to make sure he was safe. Neither decision was selfless by any stretch of the imagination. He was not the type to step up for others. His goals and ideology had nothing to do with piracy, law enforcement or anything of the sort.
“I wonder if it’s safe,” Sherry said as he poked his head out from his hiding spot. The cargo bay consisted of aisle after aisle of crates and other such containers, stacked high, secured by ropes and chains, and divided by a series of supporting walls that formed what might have been considered the rib cage of the ship. Nearby, food containers held salted fish and similarly preserved produce, while across the way stood several tall crates that likely held industrial materials. The aisle ahead was piled high with other barrels and crates, containing numerous products, many of which the youngster was unaware of.
Toeing carefully so as not to make unnecessary noise, the effeminate enigma followed in the wake of the previous passers-by. Who were they, exactly? And, perhaps more intriguingly, what was it that they were trying to protect? Sheridan’s mind ran wild at the possibilities, from a trove of valuable bullion to precious gemstones to ancient artefacts. These were pirates, so it only made sense to his naïve mind that they would be after something of great monetary value. Little did he understand the truth of this whole ordeal – how many people actually did know what was going on…?{OOC}
