A Zoan (“Animal System”) is a class of Devil Fruit that allows its consumer to shapeshift, adapting their body to take on the form and features of a specific kind of animal — like a Wolf or a Giraffe — and combine them with their normal physical features.
All Zoan Ability Users gain access to a “Full-Beast” form and a Hybrid or “Half-Beast” form, which blends their original features and animal physiology. It should be noted that even when in their Full-Beast state, a Zoan will retain some defining features of their original form, such as how Chopper’s Human form (which he calls “Heavy Point”) retains his reindeer coat and even has a bit of a blue nose. Other Zoan users have also demonstrated a tendency to retain their hair and other defining characteristics. Zoans also tend to retain their original size when fully transformed (even when their specific animal is much smaller than they are) and grow larger in their Hybrid state, though this is optional on site. If you want your Zoan to shrink to the animal’s size, you can do so provided it makes sense. If their specific animal is larger than their original size, they will grow to the animal’s size instead.
The Zoan class is divided into three major categories; (1) the regular Zoan, which transforms into existing real world beasts, such as the Bison or the Leopard; (2) the Ancient Zoan, which transforms into prehistoric animals such as the Mammoth or the Allosaurus and gains incredible strength; (3) and the Mythical Zoan, which transforms into legendary creatures of real world myth such as the Phoenix or Kitsune, inheriting additional supernatural abilities beyond their transformations and related to their mythology.
Due to the simplicity of their abilities, Zoan users do not require any additional weaknesses beyond the standard Devil Fruit vulnerabilities to submersion and Seastone, unless you wish otherwise. The exceptions to this are Mythical Zoans, whose unique powers place them much closer to Paramecia and Logia, and so they require at least one additional weakness to compensate.
The following table shows how much X-Poinz are required to purchase a type of Zoan, as well as how much Rebate you gain for doing so:
Zoan Type X-Poinz Cost Rebate Gained Regular 100 50 Ancient 300 150 Mythical 500 250
Unique Zoan Features
Once a character has consumed a Zoan-class Devil Fruit, they gain a new Trait associated with their abilities (and subsequent Devil Fruit vulnerabilities). For example, Dalton would have gained the Trait “Bison Human” after consuming his Devil Fruit. While all Zoans improve the combat abilities of their eater, some types grant unique benefits that make them exceptional. Similarly, all Zoans have the ability to further develop their transformations and improve the versatility of their power in different ways.
Inherent Quality
All Zoan users enjoy some form of boost to their physical abilities when in their Fruit-given forms, and this aims to portray just that! Whether it be a more generalized boon, such as the enhanced speed of a cheetah, or a more specific one, such as the tough claws made for digging through the earth of a mole, Inherent Qualities are a representation of the animal’s capabilities that are made accessible to a Zoan’s user whenever they are in some significant way transformed into their Beast.Regular Zoan
Those who have eaten the most common subcategory of Zoan are granted an Inherent Quality equal in scope to what a standard Static Trait or Passive Quality I might allow.
Ancient Zoan
Rarer than the regular Zoan, Ancient Zoan are notable for granting their users transformations into more primal, powerful Beasts than their more common cousins. So long as they are significantly transformed into their Ancient Beast, the users of this subcategory are granted an Inherent Quality of a naturally higher caliber, equal in scope to what a standard Legendary Trait or Passive Quality II would allow.
Mythical Zoan
As this rarest subcategory of Zoan draw their power from the stuff of myth and legend, Mythical Zoan are not granted any Inherent Quality - their own Mythical Abilities are more than a fair trade in return!
Additional Transformations
As they hone their abilities, a Zoan user has the potential to develop additional states called Forms (also known as “Points”), which combine features of their base form and that of their beast form. While similar to the “Hybrid” state, Forms typically accentuate a specific physical feature — such as how Chopper bulks his arm muscles in Arm Point and improves his legs in Jump Point — though it doesn’t necessarily have to be a feature your specific Zoan possesses. Chopper’s Horn Point and Guard Point amplified his reindeer features, rather than the human ones gained from his Devil Fruit. You’ll need to have increased your Zoan Fighting Style to at least “D” Class in order to access this feature. Follow this link to learn more about this ability!
Malleable Anatomy
The true strength of a Zoan ability is not entirely in the animal it allows you to shapeshift into, but in the way it affects the user’s body. Zoan users are able to manipulate their bodies by making changes to their anatomical structure that range from subtle to extreme, exploiting the fact that their bodies are suspended between two static physical states. A strong example of this is Kaku, who was able to condense and extend his neck and limbs like some kind of pasta machine… Alright, that was on purpose! Malleable Anatomy, or whatever you want to call it, is an Aspect option for all Zoans, which you can apply for in The Dojo!
Selective Transformation
This Devil Fruit Advancement is unique to Zoan users, allowing them to transform just parts of their bodies — such as their limbs — into their Zoan form without wholly transforming. For example, a bird Zoan might transform their arms into wings, allowing them to fly but otherwise maintaining their base form. Though it’s not as potent as a full form, it offers increased versatility. An upgraded version of this allows the Zoan to shift parts of their body into specific Forms (if they have any), rather than just their usual states, further enhancing its versatility. You can learn more about this and other Zoan enhancements in the Devil Fruit Advancement section.
